His owner had left him there without food or water — and with a massive infection from a deep gouge around his neck. It was around 8.5 inches (22 cm) long, and cut around 1.5 inches (4 cm) deep into his flesh. The bright red wound had become so infected, it was filled with pus and "drainage", and gave off a sickening odor. But his owner had clearly been starving him as well. Rescue veterinarians discovered that Frankie was emaciated, with his ribs protruding against his skin. After a good Samaritan found him and contacted authorities, they rushed the dog to an emergency hospital, where he had to endure an immediate two-hour surgery. His former owner has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty and abandonment, and "overdriving, torturing and injuring animals." This was a huge step forward for these marine mammals' well-being. However, some old marine amusement park facilities still haven't sent their captive cetaceans to sanctuaries. That is the case for mother-and-son pair Wikie and Keijo, killer whales stranded in a closed park in southeastern France. These Icelandic orcas were born in captivity, bred to become 'circus'-type entertainment for humans. They have spent decades in these same pools, mostly performing for large, screaming audiences. Then, Marineland Antibes closed in January 2025. But Wikie and Keijo still linger in captivity, as do 12 bottlenose dolphins. The facility and its pools are slowly falling apart now that it no longer has revenue. And the animals are suffering. Born to swim huge distances with social communities across a wide open ocean, they are trapped in quiet, tiny, barren enclosures. Reports state that the killer whales simply "log" or float when staff aren't present, languishing. Experts say that one of the reasons the orcas are still trapped in the deteriorating, closed park is because various organizations can't agree on an appropriate sanctuary solution. This is yet more proof that these animals should never have been held captive in the first place — we forced them into lives of servitude, and now we're going in circles trying to figure out how to undo the mess we created. States have regularly been sending out alerts warning residents of extreme winter weather, and the importance of being prepared in order to keep everyone safe. But a couple in Pennsylvania ignored these warnings. Instead, they left three dogs tied up outside their home, including one mama dog. The temperatures outside had dropped to the single-digits (Fahrenheit). That's around -15 Celsius.   Authorities didn't find any proper shelter, water, or even food outside for the desperate animals. The dogs, two females and one male, had as a result become "very skinny," with their skeletons protruding out through their emaciated skin.   Inside, they had squished seven puppies inside a crate — separated from their freezing mother. They needed access to their mother for her milk to feed them. Not only did the couple deny them that possibility, but they also withheld any other form of food or water. As a result, five of the puppies died. The couple have since been arrested and charged with over 30 counts of felony animal abuse. Regardless of what happens next, they must never be allowed around animals.
