Sign Now    Arfin,   In the northern hemisphere, summer is almost upon us, and we're about to discover what the newest round of heat waves will have in store for us, thanks to climate change. The planet keeps warming and warming, yet government leaders don't seem to be doing much to address the main causes of this fiasco. That's where trains come in. Cars and planes are some of the top contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, right up at the top of the list alongside animal agriculture. Meanwhile, trains can transport huge amounts of people very rapidly, while producing only a fraction of the carbon emissions associated with planes or cars. Around the world, many countries are investing heavily in new technology to produce high-speed, high-quality railway experiences. But, notably, the U.S. is not one of these countries — yet. The world's fastest train, located in China, can reach 286 mph / 460 kph. Meanwhile, the fastest 'Acela' trains in the U.S. currently run significantly slower, at a maximum speed of 150 mph, while the vast majority of trains in the country run much slower than that. It's no wonder trains have been unattractive to Americans so far! Luckily, both public and private companies in the U.S. are starting to develop a handful of slightly faster rail projects. These range in location from California to Texas and Florida to Washington state. These are a great start, and we should encourage this. But we need more! We can't afford to keep trains as an unattractive option in the U.S. any longer. To must fight climate change, we must invest in faster, better trains! Sign Now    Arfin, Dog-fighting is a horrifyingly gruesome bloodsport that is illegal in the United States. But that hasn't stopped some people from engaging in the nasty practice, forcing dogs to rip each other to shreds while humans stand around watching — and profiting. Luckily, New Jersey authorities decided to take this animal cruelty seriously. Officials there led an undercover sting operation that eventually helped them identify and arrest the ringleader of one of the biggest known dog-fighting organizations in the state! Apparently this man's dog-fighting ring was operating on an international scale, with purchasers overseas coming to him to buy dogs for these brutal "games." During an investigation of one of his properties, officials found upwards of 120 dogs in one location alone. Most were suffering from serious injuries, including broken bones and fractures, and sometimes even open, gaping wounds. Many were limping or underweight. Almost all were shaking from fear and showed signs of abuse. One was missing a leg. It was clear that no one had sought veterinary treatment for these animals. Authorities also discovered a fighting pit with two dead dogs inside of it. There was still blood on the walls. To create this type of an operation, it's clear many, many people were involved. But who? Police have already arrested seven co-conspirators, but obviously there were more people complicit than that. Authorities must hold the entire chain of people involved accountable — including enablers who sold dogs to this ring, housed the animals, transported them, or were otherwise complicit.
