Conflict minerals are mined by prisoners of war and child slaves. Nintendo doesn't seem to think this matters.

Dear Arfin,

Electronics like laptops, cell phones, and game consoles contain minerals that are often mined by people in the Congo forced to perform this labor under threat of violence or death. This is why they are often called 'conflict minerals.'

Companies like HP, Apple and Microsoft have taken steps to make their products conflict-free, but not Nintendo.

The very first step for Nintendo to rid its products of conflict minerals is to audit its supply chain and make the information public.

The violence and slavery associated with the production of minerals in the Congo is devastating. There is absolutely no excuse for a company with so much money and power to turn a blind eye to this human rights tragedy.

Tell Nintendo that slavery is not a game.

Keep Children Safe From Violence
Every child deserves a happy and safe childhood. But for too many, including the 20 young lives lost in Newtown, Connecticut, that isn't a reality. That's why we're calling on President Obama and Congress for a real commission, with a real mandate, and a real deadline for action.

Hi Arfin,
Happy Groundhog Day! Send your eCards today!
DID YOU KNOW?
Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrated on February 2 in the United States and Canada. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter will soon end. If on the other hand, it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly "see its shadow" and retreat back into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks.

Save the Endangered Pangolin Before It's Too Late

Pangolins are unique creatures whose sole method of defense is to roll into a ball -- they don't even have teeth! But thanks to increased poaching in their native Asia, the rare pangolin may soon be driven extinct.

Dear Arfin,

The pangolin, also known as the "scaly anteater," is a shy animal native to Asia and Africa that primarily eats ants. But thanks to their unique appearance, they're often the target of brutal, devastating poaching efforts.

Many Chinese people regard pangolin meat as a delicacy, so Chinese chefs will often go to great lengths to take the animals from the wild. But the horror doesn't end once they're captured -- chefs then keep them alive in cages and then hammer them unconscious until their throats can be cut. It's a brutal, slow death for one of the rarest mammals in the world, and it has to be stopped today.

Thanks to poachers and deforestation, the pangolin is rapidly disappearing from the world. But it's not too late. Care2 member Tom B. started a petition with us asking China to step up in its protection efforts for the pangolin -- will you join him?

Ask the Chinese government to crack down on pangolin poaching before the animals go extinct forever.

Beijing has never been known for its fresh air, but this month pollution levels were up to 45 times the safety limit. It's time for the city to act.

Dear Arfin,

Remember the Beijing Olympics? Lots of people remember record-breaking wins, the grand opening ceremony and beautiful Bird's Nest stadium. You know what I remember? The controversy over the city's air quality being so poor, they worried it would hurt the athletes health and performance.

Tell Beijing it's time to clean up their air.

One weekend this month, the air quality was so awful that residents were afraid to go outside. Pollutants were detected at up to 45 times safe levels -- officially making it the worst weekend on record. The city's bad air has been linked to asthma and other respiratory diseases and in some places the smog gets so dense its delayed traffic and flights.

Beijing's bad air isn't some unfixable problem. China's massive coal consumption and heavy traffic are leading culprits. It's time for the city's Environment Bureau to do something about it.

Demand action to clean up Beijing's air.
