action alert! An attempt at population control in Greece led to xenophobia and racist assaults on tourists. That's not what I call good policy.
Dear Arfin, Do the words "Golden Dawn" send shivers down your spine? If not, they should. The Golden Dawn Party, Greece's neo-Nazi group, has assisted in the brutal assaults of tourists and resident Greeks based on race. And law enforcement has been no help. In August of 2012, Athens began weeding out unregistered immigrants in an operation called Code Xenios Zeus. Since the process began, certain minorities have become the targets of systemic abuse by police. The US State Department website now sports a warning that non-white tourists have been detained, harassed, and endured unwarranted violence when traveling to Greece. This frightening example of ethnic nationalism cannot continue unchecked. For the safety of travelers and the health of Greek society, we need to help shut down these racist threats. Send word to have the Greek government investigate and address issues of police brutality and racism!
