India's Periyar River provides drinking water for several major towns and is home to one of the richest bird habitats in peninsular India. But it's also choked with poisonous industrial pollution.

Dear Arfin,

The Periyar River in southwest India is home to incredibly diverse populations of wildlife and flows directly into Vembanad Lake, a wetland of extreme international importance. In fact, it's been nicknamed "the Lifeline of Kerala." But its extreme pollution problem is putting all that at risk.

Towards the mouth of the river, the levels of pollution are staggering. The habitat's packed with lethal toxins like DDT, lead, cyanide and mercury.

The pollution comes from industry, agriculture and domestic waste. It is devastating aquatic ecosystems as well as posing a major health risk to the people who rely on the Periyar to live.

Worst of all, it seems the authorities are doing little about the problem -- environmentalists claim the Kerala Pollution Control Board isn't even bothering to take proper samples when serious pollution is reported.

We can't ignore this problem any longer. Tell the state government to get serious about curbing water pollution in the Periyar!
