In 2012, Care2 members used the power of the site to create lasting change. Paul Zilber from New Jersey started a petition that helped stop discrimination against same-sex couples. Parents saved their children's school from closing. A few concerned animal lovers removed an abusive director of animal control from office. Seal Pups Saved From Certain Death
SuccessTo save two seal pups from death, the Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre started a Care2 petition. More than 140,000 Care2 members signed the petition to save the pups, Zak and Mika. After receiving the signatures, the Aquarium des Iles in Quebec agreed to release the seals back into the wild. Read more.

Carnesville Elementary School Saved from Closing
SuccessParents in Franklin County, Georgia, desperate to fight their children's school closure, started a petition on Care2. The decision to keep Carnesville Elementary School open another year was made after the school board learned of the petition.

Most Important Fish in the Sea Wins Historic Protections
SuccessThanks to the efforts of our friends at the Pew Environment Group, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Center for Biological Diversity - and tens of thousands of Care2 members - the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission voted to impose a catch limit on the menhaden. Read more.

Hospital That Refused Entry to Gay Man Agrees to Work on Diversity
SuccessWhen Paul Zilber was publicly discriminated against for hugging his partner, Christian, during a visit to New Jersey's Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Center, he was heartbroken. He started a petition on Care2 demanding justice, and a local equality organization met with Barnabas executives, who have agreed to work on diversity issues. Read more.

No More Pink Slime
SuccessThanks to an increased public awareness of pink slime, this unappetizing industrialized food product has been kicked out of most of our food. Fast-food restaurants like McDonalds and Taco Bell stopped using it, the USDA gave schools the option of removing it from school lunches, and several supermarkets announced they were forsaking the additive. Abusive Director of Animal Control Fired
SuccessDavid Hennessee, director of animal control in Warren County, Tennessee, was removed from his position after the county received numerous complaints about animal cruelty, including a Care2 petition. Homeless animals no longer face abuse and neglect under his watch. Read more.

Birth Control Remains Covered Under Obamacare
SuccessOne of the biggest accomplishments of the Affordable Care Act was the provision requiring employers to include contraception coverage with no additional out-of-pocket costs in their health insurance plans. Women with insurance now face one less hurdle in accessing critical health care services. Read more.

Keystone Pipeline Stopped
SuccessEnvironmentalists everywhere rejoiced when the U.S. State Department recommended that President Obama deny the permit for the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. The decision came after countless hours of grassroots organizing, millions of petition signatures, and the arrests of thousands of protesters.

15-year-old Student Activist Returns to School
SuccessJessica Barba, a highschool freshman, was suspended from school after creating an anti-bullying video and Facebook page. Thanks to a groundswell of support for the student activist, she returned to school and the suspension has been erased from her record. Read more.
