Australia needs to stop jailing 10-year-old children.

Sign Now    Arfin, In a shocking and regressive move, the Northern Territory of Australia is planning to resume jailing children as young as 10 years old. This alarming decision comes after a brief pause last year, when the region's government raised the age of criminal responsibility to 12 years old instead. Just as alarming: most Australian states have been allowing authorities to jail 10 year old children this whole time. Australia's practice is also very clearly racist. Evidence shows that these criminality laws disproportionately target and victimize children from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. In the Northern Territory, authorities throw children in jail 11 times more frequently than in any other Australian jurisdiction — and nearly all of these children are Aboriginal. Indigenous rights organizations, human rights groups, doctors, and members of the international community have been sounding the alarm about the harm that these punitive measures are inflicting on vulnerable youth. Research confirms that incarcerating children has devastating impacts on their mental health, education, and future prospects.    The government must ddress the broader societal contexts that lead to youth's behavior, without exacerbating the cycle of trauma and disadvantage that many of these children face. 47 tigers, 3 lions, and 1 panther died at these zoos

Sign Now    Arfin, A panther, three lions, and 47 tigers have recently died at various zoos in Vietnam due to an outbreak of the H5N1 bird flu virus. These tragedies unfolded in a matter of only a few weeks in August and September — and they were all preventable.   The recent deaths of these big cats represent a failure in our responsibility to protect wildlife. These animals deserve to live in habitats that properly prioritize their health and safety. Approximately 385 tigers are held in captivity in Vietnam, with the vast majority (310 animals) being at privately-owned zoos and "farms." That includes privately-run facilities like My Quynh safari park, one of the locations where some of these animals died. Animals also perished at the Vuon Xoai zoo.  Even worse: similar things have happened before. Back in 2004, at Thailand's largest farm for breeding exotic animals, dozens of tigers contracted bird flu and either died or were killed as a result. Vietnamese authorities must protect these magnificent animals by removing them from zoos that are failing to provide adequate care and safety. Shocking video shows trainers beating a defenseless horse

We demand true accountability. That makes the following story that much more disturbing. In Idaho, two horse trainers were caught on video mercilessly beating a horse that lay defenseless on the ground.   Instead of fostering trust and empathy, these trainers resorted to horrific violence, using tools like a pipe and a two-by-four to beat and whip this poor horse over and over again.   Unfortunately, Idaho's animal cruelty laws are alarmingly lenient. Since this is their first offense, these trainers may only face minimal consequences, like a small fine as small as $100. This is unacceptable, as it fails to hold abusers accountable for their actions and does nothing to deter future cruelty.   We must demand action to protect animals from such atrocities.
