The VA's integrated hospital system is the largest in the US. It accounts for upwards of 1,000 clinics and 170 hospitals, and with approximately 26,000 doctors and 9 million patients in its system. Previous bylaws within the VA's integrated hospital system had prohibited discrimination on the basis of not only race, sex, age, color, religion, and disability, but also on the basis of politics, marital status, and national origin. Now, protections for the latter three categories have been removed. This is horrifying and could have far-reaching — and chilling — consequences. Dr. Kenneth Kizer, the former Undersecretary for Health with the VA, explained that these new rules: "seem to open the door to discrimination on the basis of anything that is not legally protected." He worries that now, medical staff could potentially refuse treatment for veterans based on a wide range of other criteria too, such as if are seeking care after a sexual assault. Veterans and members of the military risk their lives for their country, often resulting in serious consequences such as PTSD, injuries, or chronic health conditions. They were in international waters and breaking no laws. There were no weapons onboard. The aid that was confiscated included baby formula, medical supplies, and food. Yet even now, 8 of these individuals remain imprisoned and are awaiting trial. Thunberg and 2 others have been deported. Right now, 2 million people in Gaza are at risk of starvation. Around 90% of the Gaza population has been displaced, often multiple times. Upwards of 55,000 people have been killed — primarily children, women, and elderly individuals, and sometimes even at official food distribution sites when trying to access meals. For the past 11 weeks, they have been under a total siege, with Israeli military forces intensely restricting any food entering the embattled area. They have also blockaded the area since 2007. That's why Thunberg and her fellow activists joined with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition to raise awareness about this deadly, illegal blockade. Delivering humanitarian aid is a moral act that is protected by international law. And it is against that law to block aid, or to seize and imprison people who distribute aid.
