SonicSpike sends word that Florida has [0]changed how law enforcement
deals with teenagers who send racy pictures to each other over their
phones. Quoting CNN: "Before Saturday, a Florida teenager who sent or
received nude photos or video could have been charged with a felony and
forced to register as a sex offender. But a new law, recognizing the
proliferation of cell phones and computers, eases the penalties for
'sexting' infractions. A first offense is punishable by eight hours of
community service or a $60 fine; the second is a misdemeanor and the
third is a felony. ... Under House Bill 75, teens who receive explicit
images won't be charged if they took reasonable steps to report it, did
not solicit the image and did not send it to someone."

[0]xmas2003 writes "I recently had [1]cataract surgery with a Crystalens
implant. With my cloudy yellowing (UV-filtering) natural lens removed, I
see the world in a new light (more on that in a moment) as everything is
brighter and colors are more vivid ... plus in focus. As a typical
Slashdot reader, I've been myopic since childhood, so it's wonderful not
to have to wear glasses/contacts for distance. One interesting oddity is
that [2]I can now see ultraviolet light ��� it seems that [3]there are a
few people who have photoreceptors sensitive below 400nm into the UV
spectrum. I've done some testing with a Black Light and UV filter to
confirm this but would love to do more conclusive testing such as using a
[4]Monochromator ��� anyone in the Boulder, Colorado area have access to
one? And any suggestions from Slashdot readers on how I can further
explore this phenomenon? While I can't [5]see dead people, I guess I have
a 'superpower' ... although I'm not sure a middle-aged suburbanite dad
should don purple tights and cape to become a crime-fighter!"

The dispute between Mac cloner [0]Psystar and Apple has been a long and
twisty one; now, reader UnknowingFool writes that "Last week, the U.S.
Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals [1]ruled mostly against Psystar in their
appeal of their case with Apple. The Court found for Apple in that they
did not misuse copyright by having conditions in the OS X license.
Psystar won on one point in which some of the court orders should have
not been sealed."

stirring up a lot of excitement in the Slashdot community back in 2009
(almost a year before the iPad was announced and essentially killed this

idea). The company's new product seems to [3]support Hot multi-OS
switching, supposedly with a minimal performance penalty. What seems
strange to me is, why haven't other developers jumped in on this already?
Macs, for instance, made a huge campaign of their products' [4]new
ability to finally support Microsoft Windows, yet (disregarding emulation
options) they're still limited to booting to a single working system at
any time."

first 'Google Store' has opened in a PC World on London's gadget street,
Tottenham Court Road. Officially known as 'the Chromezone,' the 285sq.
ft. pop-up 'shop within a shop,' which only sells Google's Chromebook
laptop and a few accessories such as headphones, will run for three
months up to Christmas. But if the low-key experiment is successful,
Google could follow Apple in opening permanent stores around the world.
'It is our first foray into physical retail,' said Google's Arvind
Desikan. 'This is a new channel for us and it's still very, very early
days. It's something Google is going to play with and see where it
leads.'"

First time accepted submitter [0]SustainableJeroen writes "In less than
two weeks the bi-annual [1]World Solar Challenge will start. Around
[2]forty teams, mostly made up of university students from around the
globe, will battle each other for first place in the de facto world
championship of solar car racing. The teams will race each other on the
3000km Stuart highway between Darwin and Adelaide, while dodging road
trains, dust devils and kangaroos. The fastest teams will cover this
distance in four to five days, while it is by no means certain that all
teams will make it to the finish line. In 2009, the [3]Tokai University
team from Japan unexpectedly took first place in this high-tech brain
sport, with four-time winner [4]Nuon Solar Team having to settle for
second place. Who will win this edition? There are a number of very
strong contenders, but as the differences among the top teams and their
cars are very, very small it's impossible to say in advance."
