[0]Hugh Pickens writes "The Atlantic reports that one developer who
doesn't have much faith in Congress making the right decision on
anti-piracy legislation has [1]already built a workaround for the
impending censorship measures being considered, and called it DeSOPA.
Since SOPA would block specific domain names (e.g. www.thepiratebay.com)
of allegedly infringing sites, T Rizk's Firefox add-on allows you to
revert to the bare internet protocol (IP) address (e.g. 194.71.107.15)
which takes you to the same place. 'It could be that a few members of
Congress are just not tech savvy and [2]don't understand that it is
technically not going to work, at all,' says T Rizk. 'So here's some
proof that I hope will help them err on the side of reason and vote SOPA
down.' Another group called 'MAFIAAFire' decided to respond when Homeland
Security's ICE unit started [3]seizing domain names, by coding a browser
add-on to redirect the affected websites to their new domains. More than
200,000 people have already installed the add-on. ICE wasn't happy, and
[4]asked Mozilla to pull the add-on from their site. Mozilla denied the
request, arguing that this type of censorship may threaten the open
Internet."

Google executives did themselves no favors when the Senators [1]looked at
Google's business practices in September. When asked if Google has
monopoly in online search, Google chairman Eric Schmidt is quoted as
saying 'I would agree, Senator, that we are in that area.' Another
worrying quote is from Marissa Meyer, Google's VP of location services,
who said that it was 'only fair' that Google put its own sites on higher
placements than competitors. The Senators are also [2]warning that Google
is only facing one real competitor (PDF), Microsoft's Bing. Almost all
other metasearch engines use either Google or Bing technology to deliver
search results, including [3]DuckDuckGo which uses Bing. In Europe Google
is currently [4]under investigation of monopoly abuse and the EU has also

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Following up on a disturbing story [0]we discussed in November, Meshach
writes "The United States is asking scientific journals publishing
details about biomedical research to [1]censor articles out of fear that
terrorists could acquire the information. 'In the experiments, conducted
in the United States and the Netherlands, scientists created a highly
transmissible form of a deadly flu virus that does not normally spread
from person to person. It was an ominous step, because easy transmission
can lead the virus to spread all over the world. The work was done in
ferrets, which are considered a good model for predicting what flu
viruses will do in people.' The panel cannot force the journals to censor
their articles, but the editor of Science, Bruce Alberts, said the
journal was taking the recommendations seriously and would most likely
withhold some information. Are we heading for another [2]Rorschach-style
cheat sheet being developed?"

[0]jfruhlinger writes "The Kindle Fire and Barnes and Noble Nook tablets
are similar enough and close enough together in price that they ought to
be fighting market share and one-upping each other in terms of features
they offer users. But the latest OS upgrades to both gadgets claims to be
an 'upgrade' while actually taking functionality away: both [1]remove the
ability to root the device." A more balanced way of looking at it is that
the updates fix known local privilege escalation vulnerabilities. This
might be more of an issue for people wanting to hack on the Nook Tablet:
its bootloader is confirmed locked, but reports lean toward the Kindle
Fire having an unlocked bootloader letting anyone [2]flash their own
software without needing to gain root first.

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0]MrSeb writes "A crack team of engineers at the University of Illinois
has developed an [1]electronic circuit that autonomously self-heals when
its metal wires are broken. This self-healing system restores
conductivity within 'mere microseconds,' which is apparently fast enough
that operation can continue without interruption. [2]The self-healing
mechanism is delightfully simple: The engineers place a bunch of
10-micron (0.01mm) microcapsules along the length of a circuit. The
microcapsules are full of liquid metal, a gallium-indium alloy, and if
the circuit underneath cracks, so do the microcapsules (90% of the time,
anyway the tech isn't perfect yet!). The liquid metal oozes into the
circuit board, restoring up to 99% conductivity, and everything continues
as normal. This even works with multi-layer printed circuit boards
(PCBs), such the motherboard in your computer, too. There's no word on
whether this same technology could one day be used by Terminators to
self-heal shotgun blasts to the face, but it certainly sounds quite
similar. The immediate use-cases are in extreme environments (aerospace),
and batteries (which can't be taken apart to fix), but long term we might
one day buy motherboards with these self-healing microcapsules built in."

vulnerabilities in its products. Billy Rios has disclosed a range of
vulnerabilities in Siemens SIMATIC software on his blog. The holes could
allow a remote attacker to gain access to the Simatic user interface
without a user name and password. Rios claims that he has disclosed the
hole to Siemens and that [3]the company has acknowledged the problem,
only to deny its existence when a reporter asked for more information
about the vulnerability."
