[0]lseltzer writes "The iPad has dominated the high-end tablet market so
far, but that is about to change. At CES in Las Vegas in a couple weeks
you will see tablets running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) everywhere
and at [1]prices that will make an iPad a lot harder to justify. The
competition from the OEM model in the Android markets will massively
shift market share away from Apple, just as it has done in the smart
phone market."

New submitter ChromeAeonium writes "Much like vaccines and evolution,
there exists a great disparity between the scientific consensus and the
public perceptions of the safety of genetically engineered crops. A
previous study from France, which was later dismissed by the EFSA, FSANZ,
and the French High Council of Biotechnologies, claiming to have found
abnormalities in the organs of animals fed GM diets by analyzing three
previous studies was [0]discussed on Slashdot. However, a new study, also
out of France, claims the opposite is true, that GM crops are [1]unlikely
to pose health risks (translation of [2]original in French). Looking at
24 long-term and multi-generational studies on insect resistant and
herbicide tolerant plants, [3]the study states, 'The studies reviewed
present evidence to show that GM plants are nutritionally equivalent to
their non-GM counterparts and can be safely used in food and feed.'
Although it is impossible to prove a negative, and while every GM crop
must be individually evaluated as genetic engineering is a process not a
product, perhaps this study will help to ease the fears of genetically
engineered food and foster a more scientific discussion on the role of
agricultural biotechnology."

officially voiced its support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) Bill
in 2012, which is designed to thwart movie and music piracy on the
Internet by empowering copyright holders to effectively shut down
websites or online services found with infringing material. If passed,
the U.S. government could blacklist any website it deems in violation of
copyright, which could range from a few posts in a Web forum to a few
links sent in an e-mail. GoDaddy supports SOPA for 'protecting the
intellectual property of hard-working Americans, U.S. business and the

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "Brandon Rittiman reports that White House
officials [1]launched a Twitter campaign Tuesday to put pressure on
Congress to reach a deal extending the payroll-tax cut. Using the Twitter
hashtag #40dollars, the White House [2]successfully got thousands of
people to respond and explain what a $40 cut to each paycheck would mean
to them personally. By Wednesday morning, the #40dollars hashtag started
'trending,' which is what happens when Twitter's algorithms see a topic
suddenly surge. It's not easy to create that kind of surge, but the White
House has 2.5 million Twitter followers to call upon. [3]Macon Phillips,
the President's Director of Digital Strategy, says his team has managed
to get a few Twitter topics to rise to the level of 'trending' before
most notably when they began tweeting about the death of Osama bin Laden.
'What's very important about a social-media campaign like this is that
regular people are making the point about how this would affect them.
It's not us here in Washington trying to argue on their behalf.' says
Phillips. '[4]The #40dollars campaign puts a face on that amount to
demonstrate the payroll tax cut's real-world impact on middle-class
families.'"

NASA, the world's leader in space and aeronautics, is now hiring
outstanding scientists, engineers, and other talented professionals until
January 27, 2012 for [1]full time, permanent employment to carry forward
the great discovery process that its mission demands. 'Creativity.
Ambition. Teamwork. A sense of daring. And a probing mind.' To qualify,
you'll need at least a bachelor's degree in science, engineering or
mathematics. Certain degrees are immediate disqualifiers, including
nursing, social sciences, aviation, exercise physiology, technology, and
some psychology degrees, too. The job listing mandates '1,000 hours
pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft' unless you have three years of
'related, progressively responsible, professional experience' [2]like
being an astronaut somewhere else maybe? 'Since astronauts will be
expected to fly on Russia's Soyuz spacecraft, they must fit Russia's
physical requirements for cosmonauts. That means no one under 5 foot 2
inches or over 6 foot 3 inches.' Applicants brought in for interviews
will be measured to make sure they meet the job application's
'anthropometric requirements.' You'll need to [3]pass a drug test, a
comprehensive background check, a swimming test, and have 20/20 vision in
each eye and it almost goes without saying that candidates will need to
be in 'incredible shape.' [4]Applicants must pass NASA's long-duration
space flight physical, which evaluates individuals based on 'physical,
physiological, psychological, and social' stressors, like one's ability
to work in small, confined spaces for hours on end. And of
course...'Frequent travel may be required.'"

[1]reverse engineered some of the program's code to work out what's
actually going on. There are [2]three parts to a Carrier IQ installation
on your phone: The program itself, which captures your keystrokes and
other 'metrics'; a configuration file, which varies from handset to
handset and carrier to carrier; and a database that stores your actions
until it can be transmitted to the carrier. It turns out that that the
config profiles are completely unencrypted, and thus very easy to crack."

International Space Station on Friday, bringing the outpost back up to
full staff for the first time in months, [1]Russia racked up its fifth
launch accident within a year. A Soyuz-2 rocket carrying a military
communications satellite failed to reach orbit after blastoff from the
Plesetsk space center in northern Russia. The botched launch is again due
to an upper-stage engine problem."

New submitter Etrahkad writes "Trion Worlds, publisher of MMORPG Rift,
has announced that somebody [0]broke into one of their databases and
gained access to user information. First Sony and now Rift... my identity
has probably been stolen several times over, now. From the e-mail: 'We

Trion Worlds account database. The database in question contained
information including user names, encrypted passwords, dates of birth,
email addresses, billing addresses, and the first and last four digits
and expiration dates of customer credit cards. ... there is no evidence,
and we have no reason to believe, that full credit card information was
accessed or compromised in any way." Are game companies not concerned

New submitter SciComGeek writes "Few laypeople think of computing
innovation in connection with the Tevatron particle accelerator, which
shut down earlier this year. Mention of the Tevatron inspires images of
majestic machinery, or thoughts of immense energies and groundbreaking
physics research, not circuit boards, hardware, networks, and software.
Yet over the course of more than three decades of planning and operation,
[0]a tremendous amount of computing innovation was necessary to keep the
data flowing and physics results coming. Those innovations will continue
to influence scientific computing and data analysis for years to come."

donniebaseball23 writes "Amazon's entry into the tablets market has gone
probably even better than they expected. And now the Kindle Fire is
quickly becoming a viable games platform. Developers have come out in
force [0]to lavish praise on the Fire for its price and ease of use.
'People are fired up about Fire because they know it's part of a service
they already use and trust,' said Josh Tsui, president of Robomodo. 'It
becomes effortless to buy and use because it does not make them break
their usual buying patterns. It enhances it.' Added Igor Pusenjak,
president of Lima Sky: 'In many ways, the best thing about Fire is that
you barely feel it's an Android device. Amazon built its own
closed-system OS on top of Android.'"
