Dear Slashdot Newsletter Reader:
Starting on Monday, January 30th, you will notice some changes to the Slashdot newsletter. First, we are rolling out a new design. This new design will make the Slashdot newsletter easier to read and access on mobile devices, like smartphones, as well as give you the ability to decide if you want to receive html or text versions. Second, we are going to run better, more descriptive headlines. These headlines should make it easier for you scan what's inside each issue of the Slashdot newsletter and sort previous issues by subject and relevance.
With the design change, your newsletter will be coming from Slashdot Daily News < slashdot@newsletters.slashdot.org>. Please whitelist this email address! In the weeks to come, we will add some new features to this newsletter, giving you more Slashdot content and community updates. In the meantime, if you have any ideas about how we can make the Slashdot newsletter better, let us know. Feel free to send us your thoughts by emailing us at feedback@slashdot.org. I look forward to reading your ideas and suggestions.
Sincerely,
Stephen Wellman

[0]redletterdave writes "At the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Apple
announced on Thursday it would [1]update its iBooks platform to include
textbook capabilities and also added a new platform called iBooks Author,
which lets anyone easily create and publish their own e-books. Apple's
senior VP of marketing, Phil Schiller, introduced iBooks 2, which has a

images, and searching content is made significantly easier: all users
need to do is tap on a word and they are taken straight to an appropriate
glossary or index section in the back of the book. Navigating pages and
searching is also easy and fluid, and at the end of each chapter is a
full review with questions and pictures. If you want the answers to the
questions, all you need to do is tap the question to get instant
feedback. Apple also launched the iBooks Author app, which lets anyone
easily create any kind of textbook and publish it to the iBookstore, and
the new iTunes U platform, which helps teachers and students communicate
better, and even send each other materials and notes created with iBooks
Author. All of the apps are free, and available for any and all students,
from K-12 to major universities."

SpuriousLogic writes in with a link to a story about some Canadian
consumers who thought they were getting an iPad 2 but instead got the
makings of the world's oldest tablets. "As many as [0]10 fake iPad 2s,
all made of slabs of modeling clay, were recently sold at electronic
stores in Vancouver, British Columbia. Best Buy and Future Shop have
launched investigations into how the scam was pulled off. The tablet
computers, like most Apple products, are known for their sleek and simple
designs. But there's no mistaking the iPad for one of the world's oldest
'tablet devices.' Still, most electronic products cannot be returned to
stores. For the the stores and customers to be fooled by the clay
replacements, the thieves must have successfully weighed out the clay
portions and resealed the original Apple packaging. Future Shop spokesman
Elliott Chun told CTV that individuals bought the iPads with cash,
replaced them with the model clay, then returned the packages to the
stores. The returned fakes were restocked on the shelve and sold to new,
unwitting customers."

Within the next five years, chances are that 3D printing (also known by
the less catchy but more inclusive term additive manufacturing) will have
become so advanced that we will be able to upload design specifications
to a massive robot, press print, and watch as it [0]spits out a concrete
house in less than a day. Plenty of humans will be there, but just to
ogle. Minimizing the time and cost that goes into creating shelters will
enable aid workers to address the needs of people in desperate
situations. This, at least, is what Behrokh Khoshnevis, a professor of

idea is to show that even a small town, which is still quite dark, can

in Dulverton gained a lot of support from local residents and businesses.
'It needed a bit of organization to get everyone to say yes,' says town

treasure the fact we have them and to look after them,' adds Claire

[0]coondoggie writes "Perhaps it was the concern that the nearly 14 ton
Russian Mars probe would land smack-dab on the White House or maybe they
just came to their senses, but the U.S. State Department today said it
would indeed work with the European Union and other countries to develop
[1]a formal space code of conduct. Of particular concern is the growing
amount of space trash and how the world can go about eliminating or
controlling the problem. There is also the desire to keep space free of
military weaponry."

[0]MojoKid writes "Intel today unveiled a pilot program that provides
warranty protection to overclockers in the event they get a little bit
overzealous with pushing the pedal to the metal. For a fee, [1]Intel will
provide a one-time replacement of certain processors that are damaged by
overclocking and/or over-volting. It's completely optional and in
addition to the original three-year standard warranty that already
applies to Intel's retail boxed processors. Intel isn't yet ready to
flat-out endorse overclocking but the Santa Clara chip maker is perfectly
content to provide a 'limited remedy if issues arise as a result of an
enthusiast's decision to enable overclocking,' for a modest fee, of
course. The deal applies only to certain Extreme Edition and K-series
(unlocked) processors currently, in Intel's Core i7 and Core i5
families."

ananyo writes "A Scottish intelligence study that began 80 years ago has
borne new fruit. Researchers have tracked down the study's surviving
participants who joined the study when they were 11 years old to
[0]estimate the role that our genes have in maintaining intelligence
through to old age. After conducting fresh intelligence tests on the
surviving participants, the researchers tested the DNA samples they had
collected for the presence of more than half a million common genetic
variants, each affecting only a single letter in the DNA sequence of the
genome. The team then calculated whether these variants were associated
with cognitive stability how well intelligence had been maintained over
time. The sample size of 2,000 people was too small to grant the
statistical power needed to track down individual genetic signatures
associated with cognitive stability. But it was enough to estimate how
much genetics contributes to cognitive ageing. The team found that these
variants accounted for [1]nearly one-quarter of the differences in
cognitive stability."
