Dear Slashdot Newsletter Reader:
Starting on Monday, January 30th, you will notice some changes to the Slashdot newsletter. First, we are rolling out a new design. This new design will make the Slashdot newsletter easier to read and access on mobile devices, like smartphones, as well as give you the ability to decide if you want to receive html or text versions. Second, we are going to run better, more descriptive headlines. These headlines should make it easier for you scan what's inside each issue of the Slashdot newsletter and sort previous issues by subject and relevance.
With the design change, your newsletter will be coming from Slashdot Daily News < slashdot@newsletters.slashdot.org>. Please whitelist this email address! In the weeks to come, we will add some new features to this newsletter, giving you more Slashdot content and community updates. In the meantime, if you have any ideas about how we can make the Slashdot newsletter better, let us know. Feel free to send us your thoughts by emailing us at feedback@slashdot.org. I look forward to reading your ideas and suggestions.
Sincerely,
Stephen Wellman

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[0]Hugh Pickens writes "What do you do with a 1,000-foot wreck that's
full of fuel and half-submerged on a rocky ledge in the middle of an
Italian marine sanctuary? Remove it. Very carefully. Stuck on a rocky
shoal off the Tuscan island of Giglio, leaving the wreck where it is
probably isn't an option but removing a massive ship that's run hard
aground and incurred major damage to the hull [1]involves logistical and
environmental issues that are just as large. First there's the fuel. A
half a million gallons of fuel could wreak havoc on the marine ecosystem
the ship is smack in the middle of the [2]Pelagos Sanctuary for
Mediterranean Marine Mammals. Engineers may need to go in from the side
using a special drill to [3]cut through the fuel tanks in a process
called hot tapping. 'You fasten a flange with a valve on it, you drill
through, access the tank, pull the drill back out, close the valve, and
then attach a pumping apparatus to that,' says Tim Beaver, president of
the American Salvage Association. 'It's a difficult task, but it's
doable.' Then if it's determined that the Costa Concordia can be saved,
engineers could try to refloat the ship and tug it back to dry dock for
refurbishing. The job will likely require 'a combination of barges
equipped with winches and cranes' to pull the cruise liner off its side
then once the Concordia is off the rocks, 'they are going to have to
fight to keep it afloat, just like you would a battle-damaged ship.'
Another alternative is to cut the vessel into smaller, manageable parts
using a giant cutting wire coated with a material as hard as diamonds
called a cheese wire in a method was used to [4]dismember the 55,000-ton
Norwegian-flagged MV Tricolor. Regardless of how the Concordia is
removed, it's going to be a difficult, expensive and drawn-out process.
'I don't see it taking much less than a year, and I think it could take
longer,' says Bob Umbdenstock, director of planning at Resolve Marine
Group."

placing renewed emphasis on their platforms' user experience. That means
not just increased competition among smartphone and tablet platforms, but
also new challenges for mobile application developers. ... The more the
leading smartphone platform UIs differ from one another, the more effort
is required to write apps that function comparably across all of them.
Dialog boxes, screen transitions, and gestures that are appropriate for
one platform might be all wrong for another. Coding the same app for

another layer of cost and complexity to cross-platform app development."

stock, according to the FBI. The news comes as the U.S. authorities step
up their pursuit of inside traders. Two months ago, Galleon hedge fund
founder Raj Rajaratnam was sentenced to 11 years in jail for his role in
a scam involving AMD, IBM and 3Com stock. Yesterday, Sandeep Goyal, an
employee at Dell's U.S. headquarters between 2006 and 2007 before
becoming a financial analyst, was arrested. An unnamed co-conspirator in
Dell's investor relations department from 2007 to 2009 is also alleged to
have been part of the scam. ... Goyal allegedly made $175,000 by
providing inside information about Dell to a hedge fund. He has pleaded
guilty to charges of securities fraud."

stuff in his car and drove to Detroit for the [0]2012 International Auto

[0]gManZboy writes "A secure, interoperable radio network that the
Department of Justice has been working on for [1]more than a decade and
that has cost the agency $356 million may be headed for failure,
according to a new report by the agency's inspector general. Called for
in the wake of 9/11, the Integrated Wireless Network (IWS) project has
already been repeatedly scaled back. Today, the Department of Justice
continues to rely on several separate land mobile radio systems, some of
which are unreliable, obsolete, and fail to interoperate with one
another. Agents often have to swap radios, share channels, or refer to a
book of radio frequencies and manually switch between those frequencies
to stay online. Radios remain insecure, as much of the current equipment
fails to meet encryption requirements. Much of the agency's equipment is
more than 15 years old and is no longer even supported by the
manufacturer."

your own satellite into space? Thanks to a project at the Cornell Space
Science Lab, now you can. In the words of the grad student leading the
project, Zac Manchester, 'What better way of showing off your uber-geek
credentials than having your own spacecraft?' Zac hopes that by shrinking
the size of each spacecraft and using advancements in computer and solar
cell technology, satellites can follow the path of the personal computer
revolution, opening up space for the masses. For small donations you will
receive mementos, but for $300 and up you will get your very own
satellite to be launched into space. Perfect for slashdotters and school

July. I'm glad to see it gained traction.

asgard4 writes "In recent years GPUs have become powerful computing
devices whose power is not only used to generate pretty graphics on
screen but also to perform heavy computation jobs that were exclusively
reserved for high performance super computers in the past. Considering
the vast diversity and rapid development cycle of GPUs from different
vendors, it is not surprising that the ecosystem of programming
environments has flourished fairly quickly as well, with multiple
vendors, such as NVIDIA, AMD, and Microsoft, all coming up with their own
solutions on how to program GPUs for more general purpose computing (also
abbreviated GPGPU) applications. With OpenCL (short for Open Computing
Language) the Khronos Group provides an industry standard for programming
heavily parallel, heterogeneous systems with a language to write
so-called kernels in a C-like language. The OpenCL Programming Guide
gives you all the necessary knowledge to get started developing
high-performing, parallel applications for such systems with OpenCL 1.1."
