DID YOU KNOW?   General John Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, officially proclaimed Memorial Day on May 5, 1868. The day was first observed on May 30, 1868 with flowers being placed on the graves of Confederate and Union soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. By 1890, all northern states were recognizing the day but it would take until the end of World War I, when the holiday changed from honoring those who died fighting any war - not just the civil war, for the south to acknowledge the holiday.
