An anonymous reader writes "The Debian Project is [0]pleased to announce
the availability of the [1]Community Distribution Patent Policy FAQ, a
document meant to educate Free Software developers, and especially
distribution editors, about software patent risks. The FAQ has been
prepared by lawyers at Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) at the request
of and with input from the Debian Project. While the document does not
constitute legal advice, it provides insights on dealing with software
patents, which might be applicable to other community-driven Free
Software distributions. The Debian Project maintains a critical stance
towards software patents: we consider software patents a threat to Free
Software and we believe they provide no advantages in promoting software
innovation."

Jeremiah Cornelius writes "According to a report by the Associated Press,
protesters have been stopped in their tracks after [0]Facebook aided
Israel in cracking down on the group of activists from the UK, France,
and Belgium who planned their event using the popular social networking
site. Facebook allowed government agents to track the activists
activities and then create a black-list of people who participated in the
planning of the protests. The black-listed group was then forwarded to
airlines with instructions to prevent the activists from boarding air
flights to Israel. Over 200 activists were prevented from flying after
being added to the airlines terrorism watch list, according the the AP
report. Was Julian Assange correct, when he warned that Facebook was a

Panetta, on an unannounced trip to Afghanistan, says the United States

American focus had narrowed to capturing or killing 10 to 20 crucial
leaders of the terrorist group in Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen. Panetta,
who rarely spoke on the record as CIA director, offered few details to
bolster his assessment but intelligence officials say that [2]computer

that the organization was in dire need of money and struggling under

engineers run the show. The auto industry, writes TIME's Rana Foroohar,
is actually a terrific proxy for a trend toward short-term, myopically
balance-sheet-driven management that has infected American business. In
the first half of the 20th century, industrial giants like Ford, GE, AT&T
and others used new technologies to create the best possible products and
services with the idea that if you build it better, the customers will
come. But by the late '70s, if-you-can-measure-it-you-can-manage-it MBAs
were flourishing, and engineers were relegated to the geek back rooms.
'Shoemakers should be run by shoe guys,' argues Lutz, 'and software firms
by software guys.' Learning that China plans to open 40 new graduate
schools of business in the next few years, Lutz quipped, 'That's the best
news I've heard in years.'"

Australia's Great Barrier Reef, professional diver Scott Gardner heard an
odd cracking sound and swam over to investigate. What he found was a
footlong blackspot tuskfish holding a clam in its mouth and whacking it
against a rock. Soon the shell gave way, and the fish gobbled up the
bivalve, spat out the shell fragments, and swam off. Fortunately, Gardner
had a camera handy and snapped what seem to be the [0]first photographs

tool use, says the article, in part because the "tool" isn't something

U.S. and global economies if the U.S. fails to raise its borrowing limit.
Christine Lagarde, the first woman to head the lending institution, said

technical and scientific associations in Europe, has [0]certified the LG
Cinema 3D TVs to be full HD in 3D-mode. LG's Film Patterned Retarder
(FPR) technology, used on the CINEMA 3D TVs, creates the perception of 3D
depth by delivering two 540 line images, one for each eye, that are then
combined via the glasses to create a unified 1080p image. The ruling from
the VDE lets LG carry the full HD badge. There is no explanation one how
the VDE arrives at this ruling. My personal experience shows a rather big
resolution difference between FPR and shutter glass based 3D TVs."

We've sometimes seen malware sources broken down by country; now a Dutch
study attempts to increase the resolution of that information, An
anonymous reader writes with some bits gleaned from the [0]recently
published study (PDF): "Seoul is the most criminal city on the Internet,
followed by Taipei and Beijing. When the population of the top 20 cities
is taking into account, Chelyabinsk , in Russia, tops the list, followed
by Buenos Aires and Kuala Lampur. These results were found by
[1]researchers from the from the University of Twente [2]and
Quarantainenet, a security company from the Netherlands. The researchers
also found that [3]analyzing attacks' origin at the city level [[4]Original,
in Dutch] instead of country level reveals interesting findings. For
example, the U.S. ranked #3 in the list of the most criminal countries
for the reporting period, while no major U.S. city was found among the
most evil ones, while only one European city was listed among the top 20
cities, but 8 EU countries were among the most criminal. It was also
observed that the list of criminal cities remains stable over a period
time and that when the attack type is taken into account, 50% of the most
evil cities remains the same."

[0]Hugh Pickens writes writes "PC Magazine reports that the licensing
company overseeing the HDMI specification has confirmed that existing
Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters which are designed by several cable
makers and sold by several PC OEMs, [1]are apparently illegal and could
be recalled. According to Charlene Wan, director of marketing for HDMI
LLC, any cable that does not include HDMI connectors on both ends
violates the specification. "The HDMI specification defines an HDMI cable
as having ONLY HDMI connectors on the ends," says Wan. "Anything else is
not a licensed use of the specification and therefore, not allowed." That
apparently includes Apple's mini-DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters, which are
[2]sold by Belkin on Apple's Web site. However a representative for
Belkin denies that the cable it sells on Apple's Web site is illegal.
"Essentially, the product you mention in your post is not out of
compliance because it is just an adaptor and not a cable," the
representative wrote in an email. "We do not sell a cable with a male
Mini-DP and male HDMI port, which is what falls out of compliance with
the spec. HDMI does recognize a product that has a Mini-DP connector and
HDMI receptacle with an internal active circuitry as it falls into the
definition of a source device." There may also be a glimmer of hope, in
that [3]HDMI Org understands that there is a need for this type of cable:
"We do recognise that there may be a market need for a cable solution
rather than a dongle solution. However, at this time, there is no way to
produce these cable products in a licensed manner.""
