OhPlz writes "Back in 2006, a resident of New Hampshire's second largest
city was arrested while at the police station attempting to file a
complaint against officers. His crime? He had video tape evidence of the
officers' wrongdoings. According to the police, that's wiretapping. After
[0]world wide attention, the police dropped the charges. His complaint
was found to be valid, but the evidence never saw the light of day. Well,
guess what? Round two. There are differing reports, but [1]again the
police arrested Mr. Gannon and again, they seized his video camera. This
time it's 'falsifying evidence' because he tried to hand off the camera,
most likely to protect its contents. If there's the potential of police
wrongdoing, how is it that the law permits the police to seize the
evidence?"

OS X Lion for $30 available only through the Mac App Store. It's a 4 gig
download so you better not be in a hurry. Lots of new stuff both cosmetic
and functional. But if you're the sort of person who is going to install
it today, then you already know what they are! They also [2]updated the
Air lineup, dropping the old white MacBooks entirely.

An anonymous reader writes "I have a collection of large projects
(Indesign files with associated images), which are typically 40GB to 60GB
each. In this current climate, what is the 'best' method of archiving
these? Spinny magnets? Solid state drives? USB? Tape? Blu-ray? All have
pros and cons and price considerations. If I remove the price issue (my
data is important to me), does this change the choice?"

Gamespot reports on a discussion at the Develop 2011 conference in which
a panel of game designers debated whether recent big-budget releases like
Heavy Rain and L.A. Noire were [0]too long for a typical gamer's taste.
Quoting: "'Gamers are losing patience,' said [Alexis Kennedy of
Failbetter Games], when asked about his own experiences with Heavy Rain,
'so many people don't reach the end and lose the full impact of the
story.' He wasn't complimentary of its narrative either, questioning the
benefit of basing a game on long-form narrative such as film, resulting
in a 'bastardized' storyline that doesn't quite work. ... The likes of
social and casual games, particularly the cheap games available on
mobile, have changed the expectations of gamers, the panel concluded.
Since gamers are paying less money, there's less need to create
10-hour-plus gaming experiences, because consumers no longer feel
shortchanged."

While it isn't as cool as carving his name on the surface of the moon
with a giant heat ray, Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Ahyan's enormous signature is
quite an accomplishment nonetheless. Measuring 1,000 meters high and two
miles long, [0]the sheiks name is now visible from space. From the
article: "And rather than allow the writing to be washed away by the
ocean, the letters actually form waterways that absorb the encroaching
tide.The ruler's name is even visible on Google's map service. Hamad
dreamed up the idea and had his workmen toil for weeks to craft the
enormous piece of sand graffiti. It is not known how much it cost to
make."

goes against every trend in laptop design I can think of (well, apart
from the Core i7 and Core i5 processors). It's more than 1.7" thick,
weighs more than 4.5 kilograms, and apparently [0]has the world's largest
laptop screen space. As odd as lugging a 4.5kg laptop around sounds, it
can actually make sense in some situations. Sure, there are now plenty of
powerful laptops that can replace a desktop PC. But for some of us, it's
never the same as sitting in front of a desktop. Especially if you're
used to having two screens. Someone must think there's a market for the
twin-screen laptop ��� this isn't the first. Lenovo brought one out a
couple of years ago. Given the number of people who prefer a
multi-monitor setup, surely someone can come up with a lighter, less
cumbersome, and cheaper design?"

spying software that would turn on a laptop's webcam, take pictures and
then send them back to the company. Overall it seemed like a large
invasion of privacy, which should at least warrant an injunction to stop
use of the software until the case is settled, right? Not to the judge,
who [2]refused to order an injunction on the grounds that the family was
no longer in possession of the laptop. As for everyone else still using
their Aaron's laptops, the judge [3]had this to say to them (PDF):
'Moreover, it is purely conjecture that the other members of the putative
class will be subjected to remote access of personal information.'"

tiny, new satellite ��� temporarily designated P4 ��� was uncovered in a
Hubble survey searching for rings around the dwarf planet. The new moon
is the smallest discovered around Pluto. It has an estimated diameter of
8 to 21 miles (13 to 34 km). By comparison, Charon, Pluto's largest moon,
is 648 miles (1,043 km) across, and the other moons, Nix and Hydra, are

are criminals and parasites who cost both industries billions of dollars
in lost sales. In order to prove this fact a number of studies have been
commissioned to help demonstrate the effect a pirate has on sales of
entertainment. GfK Group is one of the largest market research companies
in the world and is often used by the movie industry to carry out
research and studies into piracy. Talking to a source within GfK who
wished to remain anonymous, Telepolis found that a recent study looking
at pirates and their purchasing activities found them to be almost the
complete opposite of the criminal parasites the entertainment industry
want them to be. The study states that it is much more typical for a
pirate to download an illegal copy of a movie to try it before
purchasing. [0]They are also found to purchase more DVDs than the average
consumer, and they visit the movie theater more, especially for opening
weekend releases which typically cost more to attend."

effects of wearing heavy medieval armor by monitoring volunteers, who
were experienced medieval reenactors, as they walked and ran on
treadmills, while wearing accurate replicas of 15th century armor. While
the suits of armor weighed between 30 and 50 kg, comparable to the weight
of gear carried by modern soldiers, volunteers who carried equivalent
amounts of weight in backpacks had an easier time with the weight.
Volunteers in armor burned more energy and had difficulty breathing. The
scientists speculate that much of the additional effort was due to weight
of armor on the legs ��� leg armor was one of the first things dropped in
the shift towards lighter armor in the 16th century. While it has long
been assumed that heavy medieval armor limited mobility, and that this
contributed to the outcome of battles, such as the Battle of Agincourt in
1415, this was the first study to quantify the impact of wearing heavy
armor."

working at the CDF (Collision Detector at Fermilab) experiment

jail that last summer, were acquitted of all charges Tuesday. Pete Eyre
and Adam Mueller initially were granted permission to film the bail
process, but later were forbidden by jail officials from recording the
procedure. When they continued to digitally recording their encounter
with jail officials, they were arrested by police. Eyre and Mueller
testified that they never attempted to hide the fact that they were
recording at the jail. Not only did they ask permission to film the
bail-out process ��� which initially was granted ��� but their recording
devices were 'out in the open,' Eyre said. The Jury found the defendants
not guilty of three criminal counts: Each was acquitted of unlawful
wiretapping, while Mueller also was acquitted of a charge of resisting
arrest."

'breed' plutonium from uranium. ... Once in place, the device will
operate in highly radioactive conditions and in a nitrogen atmosphere.
Nitrogen prevents any residue of the liquid metal from reacting. Exposure
to water or oxygen would cause the metal to catch fire. ... Up to three
tool bits will be in use at any one time and can be replaced by another
three carried in a special tool box without the need to remove the tool
itself from the reactor. The rest of the tool bits will be stored above
the reactor and would be fitted into place during service and maintenance
breaks."

officers out on the beat or back at the station. An iris scan, which
detects unique patterns in a person's eyes, can reduce to seconds the
time it takes to identify a suspect in custody. This technique also is
significantly more accurate than results from other fingerprinting
technology long in use by police, BI2 says. When attached to an iPhone,
MORIS can photograph a person's face and run the image through software
that hunts for a match in a BI2-managed database of U.S. criminal
records. Each unit costs about $3,000."

'It's crazy, we buy proprietary [and] we don't understand what it is

it to actually do what it should do.'"

improve. Carr's book, Inside CyberWarfare: Maping the Cyber Underworld,
presents threat examples and nation state capabilities. Libicki's book,
Cyberdeterrence and Cybrewar, attacks cyberwar from a policy viewpoint
and does not really address operational considerations. Stiennon's book,
Surviving Cyberwar, is a good place to start if you are new to the
