jungle gyms and slides disappeared from most American playgrounds across
the country in recent decades because of parental concerns, federal
guidelines, new safety standards set by manufacturers and ��� the most
frequently cited factor ��� fear of lawsuits. But today some [1]researchers
question the value of safety-first playgrounds. Even if children do
suffer fewer physical injuries ��� and the evidence for that is debatable ���
critics say that these playgrounds may stunt emotional development,
leaving children with anxieties and fears that are ultimately worse than
a broken bone. 'Climbing equipment needs to be high enough, or else it
will be too boring in the long run,' says professor Ellen Sandseter.
'Children approach thrills and risks in a progressive manner, and very
few children would try to climb to the highest point for the first time
they climb. The best thing is to let children encounter these challenges
from an early age, and they will then progressively learn to master them
through their play over the years.' After observing children on
playgrounds in Norway, England and Australia, Dr. Sandseter [2]identified
six categories of risky play, although [3]fear of litigation led New York
City officials to remove seesaws, merry-go-rounds and the ropes that
young Tarzans used to swing from one platform to another."

Early this morning [0]Atlantis landed at KSC in Florida. I've been
following the trip intently ever since my trip to Florida to [1]see the
launch of the very last Shuttle. This really is the end of an era. Thanks
go out to the thousands of NASA employees who made this happen, many of
whom have been laid off. A number of them emailed me directly showing me
pictures and sharing stories. I wish you all the best. As for America,
here's hoping that we return to space soon.

mainstream Bluetooth 4.0 devices, namely the new Macbook Air & Mac Mini
2011 editions. The products came only one year after the official core

firm Dasient, says that they have studied around 10,000 Android apps and
have found that 800 of them are [1]leaking private information of the
user to an unauthorized server. Neil Daswani is scheduled to present the
full findings at the Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas which starts on
July 30th. The Dasient researchers also found out that 11 of the apps
they have examined are sending unwanted SMS messages."

format, which it claims is 'as everyday as a document, but as interactive
as an app.' The [2]Computational Document Format (CDF) allows authors to
embed interactive charts, diagrams and graphics into their documents,
allowing readers to adjust variables to see how increasing a price
affects profits, for example, or display different segments of a brain
scan. Wolfram aims to make the format easy enough for non-programmers to
use, based on the linguistic commands used in its search engine.
'[Currently] anyone who can make an Excel macro should easily be able to
make interactivity for CDF,' said Conrad Wolfram. 'Where I'd like to get
is that anyone who can make an Excel chart can make interactivity in
CDFs.'"

siliconbits writes "GE Global Research announced earlier today that it
has managed to cram up to [0]500GB worth of data on a standard DVD-size
disc, an increase in storage density of roughly 100x. What's more, the
tech arm of conglomerate General Electric Company says that the storage
solution will record data at the same speed as Blu-ray discs while
increasing storage capacity by 25 times. The Blu-ray Disk Association
says that the commonly available 12x speed Blu-ray writers have a maximum
writing speed of up to 400Mbps (or 50MBps) which means that in theory, it
would take just over three hours to fill that new holographic hard disk.
GE has confirmed that its R&D and licensing team will be sampling the
media to qualified partners that may be interested in licensing the
technology."

Sony is determined to push 3D graphics into the realm of gaming, but the
company seems to be aware that quality, not quantity, is what can win
over gamers. They've been telling game developers to [0]take the plunge
only if it makes for a better gaming experience, and not just to take
advantage of an industry buzz word. Sony's Mick Hocking said, "We need
to, and we're trying to encourage everyone to learn about 3D properly and
come and talk to us so we'll support them when they convert the games.
But only deliver the best quality 3D. As we've seen in some other
industries, if you make great quality 3D, in film you could say Avatar ���
it's the most successful film of all time, it's the highest grossing film
of all time ��� but since then that hasn't been followed up with the same
degree of success. ... If people see great quality 3D it does enhance the
experience. It's a great feature for a game. But if they see poor quality
3D it can put them off. Unfortunately some people are producing poor
quality 3D, in all mediums. Over the last 12 months we've seen TV, film,
some games, where the quality hasn't been there. It's just a case of
people need to understand how to work with 3D, how to make it technically
correct and then how to use it creatively. Only add 3D where it makes a
difference to the gameplay experience. It must add something. Don't just
add depth for the sake of it."

idea behind it is that government workers can use a CD-ROM or USB stick

computers such as those available in hotels or a worker's own home. The
environment that it offers should be largely resistant to Internet-borne
security threats such as viruses and spyware, particularly when launched
from read-only media such as a CDROM. The LPS system does not mount the
hard drive of the host machine, so leaves no trace of the user's
activities behind."

In an interview with Forbes, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick spoke about
[0]the rise and fall of the Guitar Hero franchise, saying "it became
unsuccessful because it didn't have any nourishment and care." He then
revealed that after effectively canceling the franchise [1]last year, the
company is looking for ways to resurrect it. "We said you know what, we
need to regain our audience interest, and we really need to deliver
inspired innovation. So we're going to take the products out of the
market, and we're not going to tell anybody what we're doing for awhile,
but we're going to stop selling Guitar Hero altogether. And then we're
going to go back to the studios and we're going to use new studios and
reinvent Guitar Hero. And so that's what we're doing with it now." Kotick
also addressed Activision's lack of foresight regarding DJ Hero: "...in
hindsight, if you step back ��� and it really would have been a simple
thing to do ��� we should have said, 'Well, how many people really want to
unleash their inner DJ?'"

NumberField writes "Researchers in Germany released a [0]pair of
[1]papers documenting severe power analysis vulnerabilities in the
bitstream encryption of multiple Xilinx [2]FPGAs. The problem exposes
products using FPGAs to cloning, hardware Trojan insertion, and reverse
engineering. Unfortunately, there is no easy downloadable fix, as
hardware changes are required. These papers are also a reminder that
[3]differential power analysis (DPA) remains a potent threat to
unprotected hardware devices. On the FPGA front, only Actel seems to be
[4]tackling the DPA issue so far, although their FPGAs are much smaller
than Xilinx's."

Andrew Wilson, head of development for EA Sports, spoke at the Develop
2011 conference about [0]an unusual business plan the company is
considering for future games: "[Wilson] raised the subject of Amazon's
Whispersync feature, which allows customers to download a digital book
for one price and then read it on whichever format they like from PCs to
smartphones and Kindle, without having to pay again for each platform. He
suggested that eventually EA Sports may well move toward the same model
with its own games, even providing all of its titles, from FIFA and
Madden to Tiger Woods PGA Tour golf, for one fixed price on multiple
platforms ��� all linked by the same social gaming ecosystem. 'It's about
handing over control to the gamer,' he said. 'Ultimately, what we want to
get to is this concept where we break down the barriers between the
franchises. John Riccitiello, our CEO, says it seems like such a waste ���
we spend $20-40M making each of these games, but most gamers only ever
play one, because the business model is an impediment. So how about we
drive toward a model where every gamer can experience everything we make
without paying that much more money. You've got to recognize that given
the opportunity, the consumer will play and they will bring their
friends.'"

Slate's "Summer Camp" issue has revived a piece from a few years back
recounting author [0]Meghan O'Rourke's experience as a student at "nerd
camp." O'Rourke was a student at Johns Hopkin's [1]CTY program (bias
alert: so was I, and remain a fan), but I suspect there's a lot in common
with the various Governor's Schools and programs like Duke's TIP. What's
been your experience with such programs? Are you going to one now? Are
your kids?

share restricted files. Given the concerns around cloud and security,
this will worry some. Nevertheless, a deal between the services arm of
the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and SaaS provider Huddle has
been penned. The SaaS service will run in the FCO's internal cloud, known
as the Government Secure Application Environment (GSAE). This will allow
civil servants, diplomats and other Government staff to share documents
up to the secrecy level IL3, or Restricted."
