back, with a prominent member noting on CNN that McCain had been

[0]asto21 writes "Cnet's Steve Guttenberg sheds light on this interesting
development that over the years, actual [1]sound quality became a
secondary selling point since most people started buying their equipment

the number of connections and wireless interfaces and wattage of systems.
As a result, there was less money in R&D budgets to spend on advancements

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "According to Rhone Resch, the last three years
have seen the U.S. solar industry go from a start-up to a major industry
that is creating well-paying jobs and growing the economy in all 50
states, [1]employing 93,000 Americans in 2010, a number that is expected
to [2]grow between 25,000 to 50,000 this year (PDF). In the first quarter
of 2011, the solar industry installed 252 megawatts of new solar electric
capacity, a 66 percent growth from the same time frame in 2010. Solar
energy is [3]creating more jobs per megawatt than any other energy source
(PDF) with the capability, according to one study, of generating over 4
million jobs by 2030 with aggressive energy efficiency measures. There
are now almost 3,000 megawatts of solar electric energy installed in the
U.S., enough to power 600,000 homes. In the manufacturing sector, solar
panel production jumped 31 percent. 'The U.S. market is expected to more
than double yet again in 2011, installing enough solar for more than
400,000 homes,' writes Resch. 'Last year, the industry set the ambitious
yet achievable goal of [4]installing 10 gigawatts annually by 2015 (PDF)
enough to power 2 million more homes each and every year.'"

Last year Ubisoft introduced DRM for their PC games that [0]required a
constant internet connection, going so far as to terminate single-player
games if the connection was interrupted. After facing outrage, boycotts,
and DDoS attacks, Ubisoft seemed to have softened their stance, issuing a
patch for two games that [1]allowed offline play. Unfortunately, it seems
the change wasn't permanent; Ubisoft's upcoming racing game [2] Driver:
San Francisco marks the return of the contentious DRM.

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "Remember when the Gay Girl in Damascus
[1]revealed himself as a middle-aged man from Georgia? On a platform like
Twitter, which doesn't ask for much biographical information, it's easy
(and fun!) to take on a fake persona but now linguistic researchers have
[2]developed an algorithm that can predict the gender of a tweeter based
solely on the 140 characters they choose to tweet. The research is based
on the idea that women use language differently than men. 'The mere fact
of a tweet containing an exclamation mark or a smiley face meant that
odds were a woman was tweeting, for instance,' reports David Zax. Other
research corroborates these findings, finding that women tend to use
emoticons, abbreviations, repeated letters and expressions of affection
more than men and linguists have also [3]developed a list of
gender-skewed words used more often by women including love, ha-ha, cute,
omg, yay, hahaha, happy, girl, hair, lol, hubby, and chocolate.
Remarkably, even when only provided with one tweet, the [4]program could
correctly identify gender 65.9% of the time. (PDF). Depending on how
successful the program is proven to be, it could be used for
ad-targeting, or for socio-linguistic research."

improved stability and performance. Lots of visual polishing took place
with an update to the Oxygen icons, and improved consistency between
panel items such as clock and notification areas. The window manager KWin
brings a new shadow system and can now run on OpenGL ES supporting
hardware, making it better suited for mobile devices. Network management
widget is much improved. Navigating through applications and recent files
is easier with the addition of breadcrumbs to the Kickoff application
launcher. Kontact groupware solution rejoins the rest of the KDE
software, with increased stability, better connection to new services and
sharing of communication information between more applications. Dolphin
file manager has a cleaner default appearance. The menu bar is hidden,
but easy to reach and restore. The file searching interface has been
improved. Marble the virtual globe now has voice navigation support and a
map creation wizard. Gwenview image viewer now offers the ability to
compare two or more pictures side by side. Digikam photo management app
brings face detection and recognition."

Justice Arnold ruled that BT must use its blocking technology CleanFeed
which is currently used to prevent access to websites featuring child
sexual abuse to block Newzbin 2. 'Currently CleanFeed is dealing with a
small, rural road in Scotland,' ISPA council member James Blessing told
BBC Radio 4's PM programme. 'Trying to put Newzbin and other sites into

blocking is pointless and dangerous. These judgements won't work to stop
infringement or boost creative industries. And there are serious risks of
legitimate content being blocked and service slowdown. If the goal is
boosting creators' ability to make money from their work then we need to
abandon these technologically naive measures, focus on genuine market
reforms, and satisfy unmet consumer demand," said ORG campaigner Peter

[0]Gibbs-Duhem writes "It makes me very nervous that my Android phone has
access to my email/AIM/G-talk/Facebook, protected only by a [1]presumably
fairly easily hacked geometric password protection scheme. Even more
because simply attaching the phone to a USB port allows complete access
to the internal memory and SD card regardless of whether a password is
entered. I have no idea how much of that information ranging from cached
emails to passwords stored in plaintext is accessible when mounting the
device as a USB drive, and that worries me." For the rest of
Gibbs-Duhem's question about issues in Android security, read on below.

[0]cultiv8 writes "A research team from Seoul National University (SNU)
said the genetically modified female beagle has been found to [1]glow
fluorescent green under ultraviolet light if given a doxycycline
antibiotic. The researchers, who completed a two-year test, said the
ability to glow can be turned on or off by adding a drug to the dog's
food. 'The creation of Tegon opens new horizons since the gene injected
to make the dog glow can be substituted with genes that trigger fatal
human diseases,' the news agency quoted lead researcher Lee Byeong-chun
as saying. He said the dog was created using the somatic cell nuclear
transfer technology that the university team used to make the world's
first cloned dog, Snuppy, in 2005."

alphadogg writes "Software that lets drivers unlock car doors and even
start their vehicles using a mobile phone [0]could let car thieves do the
very same things, according to computer security researchers at iSec
Partners. Don Bailey and fellow iSec researcher Mathew Solnik say they've
figured out the protocols that some of these software makers use to
remote control the cars, and they've produced a video showing how they
can unlock a car and turn the engine on via a laptop. According to
Bailey, it took them about two hours to figure out how to intercept
wireless messages between the car and the network and then recreate them
from his laptop. Bailey will discuss the research at next week's Black
Hat conference in Las Vegas, but he isn't going to name the products
they've hacked they've looked at two so far or provide full technical
details of their work until the software makers can patch them."

An anonymous reader writes "A group of [0]Senators are meeting in secret
today, while most people are focused on the 'debt ceiling' issue, in
order to try to rush through a renewal of the FISA Amendments Act, which
expressly allowed warrantless wiretapping in the U.S. The law isn't set
to expire until next year, but some feel that the debt ceiling crisis is
a good distraction to pass the extension without having to debate the
issue in public. The meeting is being held in secret, but it's not
classified, so people can demand to know how their Senator voted."

An anonymous reader writes "If you are like me, then the slightest
disparity in those 3D movies causes nausea and I know it does with
thousands of others too. LG claims to have solved the problem with a new
technology that uses eye-tracking, similar to those red-eye detectors in
digital cameras, adjusting the 3D display so that you don't get sick. Due
to be available in LG's [0]glasses-free 3D computer monitor it also
displays normal 2D stuff, so even if you don't use the 3D much it might
be worth a try. I plan on buying one of the 20-inch monitors this fall
when it becomes available in the U.S. (It's only in Korea now.) If it
works as advertised great; if not, at least I can still use it as a
regular monitor."

[0]CWmike writes "Almost [1]anyone can snoop the secure data traffic of
unpatched iPhones and iPads using a recently-revised nine-year-old tool,
a researcher said as he urged owners to apply [2]Apple's latest iOS fix.
If iOS devices aren't patched, attackers can easily intercept and decrypt
secure traffic the kind guarded by SSL, which is used by banks,
e-tailers and other sites at a public Wi-Fi hotspot, said Chet
Wisniewski, a security researcher with Sophos. 'This is a nine-year-old
bug that Moxie Marlinspike disclosed in 2002,' Wisniewski told
Computerworld on Wednesday. On Monday, Marlinspike released an
easier-to-use revision of his long-available 'sslsniff' traffic sniffing
tool. 'My mother could actually use this,' he said."

derGoldstein tips a story at AllThingsD about a study into mobile gamers'
spending habits: "[The study] provides a fairly compelling argument as to
why a developer should continue to give away his or her games for free
... After evaluating the spending habits of 3.5 million consumers across
both iOS and Android, Flurry found that among those who pay for in-app
transactions, [0]greater than five percent will spend more than $50,
which rivals the amount paid at retail for top console and PC games."

this week hackers stole 35 million account details from two sites. A
portal called Nate Portal that provided e-mail services and a social

Telecom claims, used IP addresses originating from China. From the
article, 'The stolen data included user IDs, passwords, social security
numbers, names, mobile phone numbers and email addresses. Nate said the
social security numbers and passwords are encrypted so that they are not
