An anonymous reader writes with news of a plan from the Australian
government to cut down on the number of kids who aren't vaccinated. The
new scheme will [0]deny family tax benefits to parents whose children
don't pass immunization checks. Quoting: "The FTB supplement, worth $726
per child each year, will now only be paid once a child is fully
immunized at these checks. Families are already required to have their
child fully immunized to receive Child Care Benefit and the Child Care
Rebate. Children will also be required for the first time to be
vaccinated against meningococcal C, pneumococcal and chicken pox.
Children will also be immunized against measles, mumps and rubella
earlier, at 18 months instead of the current four years of age."

previously thought. 'The new models predict that given a doubling in CO2
levels from pre-industrial levels, the Earth's surface temperatures will

by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 2007 report, which
suggested a rise of between 2 to 4.5 degrees C."

without owning an actual camera. I've owned photosensors that were
shoehorned into various other gadgets, but I've gotten to the point where
the images produced by my smartphone aren't cutting it. My question: what
camera would you recommend for getting into basic photography? I don't
mean that in the sense of photography as a hobby or a profession, but
simply as a method for taking images ��� of friends, family, and projects ���
that actually look good. That's a subjective question, I know, but I
suspect many of you have a strong grasp of price versus performance. For
example, when I'm picking a new video card, it's easy to figure out which
cards are the best deals for a given price point ��� then I just have to
pick a price I'm comfortable with. I figure a decent camera will run me a
few hundred dollars, which is fine. But I don't have the expertise to
know at what point spending more money isn't going to do me, as a camera
newbie, any good. Any thoughts?"

known for laying the blame for many problems on the unauthorized
downloading of its games. Stanislas Mettra, creative director of the
upcoming game I Am Alive, confirms this once again by saying that [0]the
decision not to release a PC version is a direct result of widespread
game piracy. However, those who look beyond the propaganda will see that
there appears to be more to the story than that." Another Ubisoft
employee made [1]similar comments about upcoming Ghost Recon games.
Regarding Ghost Recon Online being free-to-play: "We are giving away most
of the content for free because there���s no barrier to entry. To the users
that are traditionally playing the game by getting it through Pirate Bay,
we said, 'Okay, go ahead guys. This is what you���re asking for. We���ve
listened to you ��� we���re giving you this experience. It���s easy to
download, there���s no DRM that will pollute your experience.'" Regarding
Future Soldier having no PC version: "When we started Ghost Recon Online
we were thinking about Ghost Recon: Future Solider; having something
ported in the classical way without any deep development, because we know
that 95% of our consumers will pirate the game. So we said okay, we have
to change our mind."

PolygamousRanchKid tips this article about an idea for revolutionizing
the rail system in the long-term: "The idea is to have a city-wide
network of trams that travel in a loop and connect with a high-speed rail
service. But instead of passengers having to get off the tram at a rail
station and wait for the next HSR service to arrive, [0]the moving tram
would 'dock' with a moving train, allowing passengers to cross between
tram and train without either vehicle ever stopping. 'The trams speed up
and the high-speed train slows down and they join, so they dock at high
speed,' explains Priestman. 'They stay docked for the same amount of time
that it would stop at a station,' he adds. While Priestman admits that it
will be some time before his vision could be implemented, he says the
time has come to rethink how we travel. 'This idea is a far-future
thought but wouldn't it be brilliant to just re-evaluate and just

morning about Ubisoft's claims of overwhelming game piracy. An article at
IGN quotes [1]a different point of view from Gabe Newell, CEO of Valve:
"In general, we think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy.
Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem. For
example, if a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7,
purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal
provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3
months after the U.S. release, and can only be purchased at a brick and
mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable. Most DRM
solutions diminish the value of the product by either directly
restricting a customers use or by creating uncertainty." The quote was
taken from an interview at The Cambridge Student Online, in which Newell
speaks to a few other subjects, such as [2]creating games for multiple
platforms and e-sports.

applications to the FCC for their merger bid. This comes after statements

has agreed to pay T-Mobile 4 Billion US dollars to cover accounting and

Bochum [0]built an FPGA board-based man-in-the-middle attack against the
HDCP copy protection used in HDMI connections. After the leak of an
[1]HDCP master key in 2010, Intel proclaimed that the copy protection was
[2]still secure, as it would be too expensive to build a system that
could conduct a real-time decryption of the data stream. It has now been
proven that a system can be built for around $350 (���200) to do the task.
However, the solution is of no great practical use for pirates. It can
easily be used to burn films from Blu-ray discs, but receivers which can
deliver HDTV recordings are already available ��� and they provide the data
in compressed form. In contrast, recording directly from an HDMI port
results in a large amount of data."

will roll around the prison monitoring conditions inside the cells and
communicate back to human guards if they detect a problem such as

Skynet, you needn't be: according to Prof. Lee Baik-chul of Kyonggi
University, who's running the trial, '... the robots are not terminators.

agencies and offered to Egypt's feared secret police, takes advantage of
an unencrypted HTTP request that is filed by iTunes when Apple Software
Updater is inactive. It redirects users' web browsers to a customized web
page that pretends Flash is not installed on the user's computer, then
installs a sophisticated piece of spyware that [3]sends info on a user's
activities directly to foreign intelligence services. The latest iTunes
software update, 10.5.1, released on November 14, appears to have fixed
the exploit FinFisher used. A prominent security researcher warned Apple
about this dangerous vulnerability in mid-2008, yet [4]Apple 'waited more
than 1,200 days to fix the flaw,' writes security researcher Brian
Krebs."

DMandPenfold writes "NASDAQ's [0]aging software and out of date security
patches played a key part in the stock exchange being hacked last year,
according to the reported preliminary results of an FBI investigation.
Forensic investigators found some PCs and servers with out-of-date
software and uninstalled security patches, Reuters reported, including
Microsoft Windows Server 2003. The stock exchange had also incorrectly
configured some of its firewalls. NASDAQ, which prides itself on running
some of the fastest client-facing systems in the financial world, does
have a generally sound PC and network architecture, the FBI reportedly
found. But sources close to the investigation told Reuters that NASDAQ
had been an 'easy target' because of the specific security problems
found. Investigators had apparently expressed surprise that the stock
exchange had not been more vigilant."

An anonymous reader writes "Patent firm IPCom announced today that it
wants [0]a ban on sales of HTC's 3G smartphones in Germany, after HTC
dropped its appeal to a patent ruling IPCom won. HTC says the appeal was
dropped because another patent court partially invalidated the patent in
question, but IPCom is pressing forward to try to dampen HTC's holiday
sales. 'IPCom, based in Pullach, Germany, is seeking royalties from a
family of mobile-technology patents it acquired in 2007 from Robert Bosch
GmbH, the world's largest automotive supplier. IPCom bought the patents
after Bosch failed to license them to Nokia in 2003.'"
