First time submitter [0]Readycharged writes "The Daily Mail reports on a
piece from The Sunday Times revealing that University College London have
seen an increasing number of Muslim students [1]boycotting lectures on
Evolution due to clashes with the Koran. Steve Jones, Emeritus Professor
of Human Genetics, says, 'I've had one or two slightly frisky discussions
with kids who belonged to fundamentalist Christian churches, now it's
Islamic overwhelmingly.' He adds, 'What they object to and I don't
really understand it, I am not religious they object to the idea that
there is a random process out there which is not directed by God.' The
article also reveals that Evolutionary Biologist and former Oxford
Professor Richard Dawkins also experienced Muslims walking out of such
lectures."

traditional computer-nerd thing (comp sci or physics, computer degree,

myself web-design, Linux/LAMP, Javascript, and now Drupal. I've worked
for a short time at a web dev shop but mostly have just done freelance
projects and here-and-there stuff for websites or projects, many of which
have gone under or are no longer accessible. I'm creative, have
Photoshop/GIMP skills, I'm personable and self-motivated...and I'd like
to get a 'real' job now but I don't really look like much on paper how
can I (specifically with Drupal) make myself look good on a CV and/or
establish solid credentials that will make people more willing to take a
chance and hire me? Will Drupalcon 2012 help me make inroads? Are there
other ways to 'prove' myself to be a capable web admin/developer?"

[0]Hugh Pickens writes"The 'Earthscraper,' a [1]65-story,
82,000-square-foot inverted pyramid beneath Mexico City takes a new
approach to escalating megacity problems like population growth, urban
sprawl, preserving open space, and conserving energy and water, promising
to turn the modern high-rise, quite literally, on its head. The proposed
building will be [2]located at the Zocalo, Mexico City's major public
plaza one of the few sizable open spaces left in the city of 9 million.
'It's a massive empty plot, which makes it the ideal site for our
program,' says architect Esteban Suarez. The Earthscraper concept begins
with a glass roof replacing the opaque stone surface of the Zocalo
preserving the open space and civic uses of the Zocalo, while [3]allowing
natural lighting to flow downward into all floors of the tapering
structure through clear or translucent core walls. The first 10 stories
would hold a museum dedicated to the city's history and its artifacts.
'We'd almost certainly find plenty of interesting relics during the dig
dating right back to the Aztecs who built their own pyramids here,' says
Suarez adding that the design incorporates a [4]system of gardens
occurring roughly every 10 stories, to help generate fresh air. One thing
working in Earthscraper's favor is there are strict laws that prevent
building upwards in this part of Mexico City, but no laws for building
down. 'They will have to develop new laws to stop this from happening,'
says Chief Design Officer Emilio Barja. 'I hope they don't [find the]
time to do that.'"

An anonymous reader writes "'Houston, we've had a problem,' said
astronaut Jack Swigert on April 13, 1970. But the problem wasn't as
simple as three astronauts potentially trapped in the void of space,
200,000 miles from Earth. The catastrophic risk came from the SNAP-27
radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG), a small nuclear reactor that
was going to be placed on the moon to power experiments, carrying
Plutonium 238 in Apollo 13's lunar module. As luck would have it, NASA
had experience losing RTGs a navigation satellite failed to reach orbit
in 1964 and [0]scattered small amounts of plutonium over the Indian Ocean.
The SNAP-27 had been engineered to make it back to Earth intact in such
an incident. The plutonium, like the astronauts, apparently survived
reentry and came to rest with what remained of the lunar module in the
Tonga Trench south of Fiji, approximately 6-9 kilometers underwater (its
exact location is unknown). Extensive monitoring of the atmosphere in the
area showed that no radiation escaped."

[0]MrSeb writes "Rohm, a Japanese semiconductor company, has created a
silicon chip and antenna that's currently capable of transmitting
1.5Gbps, with the potential to [1]scale up to 30Gbps in the future. While
this is a lot faster than anything currently on the market, the
significant advance here is the reception and transmission of terahertz
waves (300GHz to 3THz) using a chip and antenna that's just two
centimeters long. Rohm says it will only cost $5 when it comes to market
in a few years a stark comparison to current terahertz gear that's both
large and expensive. The problem with terahertz transmissions, though, is
that it's highly directional with a submillimeter wavelength, it's more
like a laser than a signal. Terahertz waves might enable awesome
device-to-device networks, but it isn't going to bring 30Gbps internet to
a whole city block. More interestingly, submillimeter terahertz radiation
is the next step up from the gigahertz radiation used in full-body
millimeter wave scanners. Terahertz waves can not only see through
clothing, but can also penetrate a few millimeters of skin."

Most of these censorship systems are based on proprietary, enterprise

[0]angry tapir writes with an excerpt from a Techworld article:
"Germany's Merck KGaA has threatened legal action after it said it
[1]lost its Facebook page apparently to rival Merck & Co. in the U.S.,
though it has yet to identify defendants in the case. In a [2]filing
before the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Merck said it intends
to initiate an action based on the apparent takeover of its Facebook page
at [3]www.facebook.com/merck by its similarly-named but unrelated
competitor, Merck & Co."

Sparrowvsrevolution writes "Twitter has [0]confirmed that it's acquiring
Whisper Systems, the mobile encryption startup founded by hacker and
security researcher Moxie Marlinspike. Marlinspike has built some of the
most noteworthy tools in applied cryptography over the last few years,
including the encrypted calling app Redphone, the hardened Android OS
WhisperCore, and Convergence, a system for fixing the broken SSL
certificate authority system. Twitter won't yet say how it plans to
integrate Marlinspike or his products."

[0]Michael J. Ross writes "With more people accessing the Internet using
mobile devices than computers, web designers and developers are
challenged to make sites that work well on both categories of hardware
or resign themselves to the greater costs and other disadvantages of
maintaining two versions of each web site (a mobile-ready version as well
as one for much larger screens). Fortunately, recent advances in web
technologies are making it easier to build web pages whose contents and
their positioning are automatically modified to match the available
screen space of the individual user. These techniques are explored in
detail in a recent book, Responsive Web Design, written by Ethan
Marcotte, a veteran web designer and developer." Keep reading for the
rest of Michael's review.
