 More than twenty years of campaigning finally resulted in an EU ban on cosmetic animal testing. No one selling cosmetic products in the EU will be allowed to test finished products or their ingredients on animals anywhere in the world, a comprehensive rule that closes loopholes companies have previously used to continue animal testing.  Several energy companies requested oil and gas leases for public lands in Utah and Wyoming, assuming they would no doubt be approved. Instead, a federal district court declined to issue the permits, citing lack of compliance with laws protecting the land and animals in surrounding areas.  Manta rays and five special shark species will be banned from international trade thanks to the votes of delegates to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Sharks have been heavily targeted for their fins and mantas for their gill rakers, despite their proven value to ocean ecosystem health.
