Dear Arfin,

The Brazilian government has big plans for the Tapajós River watershed, including a series of dams on it and its tributaries. But environmental and indigenous rights groups are up in arms because, they claim, officials haven't consulted the communities who live nearby.

These dams are part of a massive hydroelectric project and could have devastating effects on the environment and communities on the river. The government knows this, which is why laws are in place to make sure any project of this scale -- with the ability to flood homes and habitat -- gets local permission before moving forward.

But reports coming out of the Tapajós communities paint a bleak picture. Some say authorities have used intimidation techniques to pressure communities into signing off on the project, including the deployment of armed troops to the region.

We can't let the government walk all over families and communities. Tell officials to call off federal troops and engage in a legal conversation with people on the Tapajós River
