[0]jfruhlinger writes "The American tech industry is hobbled by a poor
education system, misguided spending priorities, and a byzantine patent
system. But America can still [1]come out on top, not least because of
its longstanding tradition of individuality and private R&D investment.
'Open, distributed projects have the potential to outperform the
traditional closed, controlled research model by reducing costs and
duplication of effort, making it easy to collect and analyze masses of
data from diverse sources, and allowing the best brains to participate no
matter where they live.'"

An article at the Opposable Thumbs blog examines the Xbox Live Indie
Games economy, finding that developers are [0]having trouble making
enough money to justify continued work with the platform. Quoting: "If
you want to publish a console video game, there's no easier route than
the Xbox Live Indie Games program. But while it's relatively easy to get
your game on the service, it's hard to get it noticed. There's a lot of
junk on XBLIG, so much so that a group of developers banded together at
the end of last year to promote quality indie titles. There have been
success storieslike the recently released FortressCraft, which managed
to sell 16,000 units on the day of releasebut they're not exactly
common. So with virtually no promotion, and with average earnings of just
$3,800 per title, why do developers continue to create games for the
platform? ...virtually all of the developers we spoke to are considering
moving on from the platform. But all seem to view their experience as
valuable, which in the end is part of the point of XBLIG: it's a place
where virtually anyone can make a game that can be played on a console.
Devs just need to know what they're getting into."

fangmcgee writes with this excerpt from a University of Oxford news
release: "Technology developed for mobile phones and computer gaming
such as video cameras, position detectors, face recognition and tracking
software, and depth sensors is now readily and cheaply available. So
Oxford researchers have been looking at ways that this technology can be
[0]combined into a normal-looking pair of glasses to help those who might
have just a small area of vision left, have cloudy or blurry vision, or
cant process detailed images. ... The glasses have video cameras mounted
at the corners to capture what the wearer is looking at, while a display
of tiny lights embedded in the see-through lenses of the glasses feed
back extra information about objects, people or obstacles in view. In
between, a smartphone-type computer running in your pocket recognizes
objects in the video image or tracks where a person is, driving the
lights in the display in real time. The extra information the glasses
display about their surroundings should allow people to navigate round a
room, pick out the most relevant things and locate objects placed
nearby."

Stirfry192 writes with news that Terrafugia, makers of a vehicle
alternately called a 'flying car' or '[0]roadable aircraft,' have been
granted [1]a three-year exemption to federal motor vehicle safety rules
in order to foster further development and innovation. "The DOT granted
the three-year 'hardship' exemption because it bought the argument from
Terrafugia that its attempt to comply with DOT regulations at the same
time as Federal Aviation Administration rules would be prohibitively
expensive. Terrafugia had argued that an exemption would allow it more
time to research more appropriate solutions to the requirements at the
same time as making the flying car a feasible project. The company, an
MIT spin-off located in Woburn, Mass. intends to use motor-cycle tires
and rims instead of tires usually used for regular cars. The purpose is
to minimize the weight of the craft."

[0]krebsonsecurity writes "Merchant banks that process credit card
payments for fake antivirus or 'scareware' exhibit a distinctive pattern
of card processing that could be used by Visa and MasterCard to [1]weed
out the rogue processors, according to a new study by the University of
California, Santa Barbara. From the study: 'The UCSB team found that the
fake AV operations sought to maximize profits by altering their refunds
according to the chargebacks reported against them, and by refunding just
enough to remain below a payment processor's chargeback limits. Whenever
the rate of chargebacks increased, the miscreants would begin issuing
more refunds. When the rate of chargebacks subsided, the miscreants would
again withhold refunds.' The study also highlights how few customers ever
request a refund, and how affiliates pushing this junk software made more
than $133 million."

[0]CWmike writes "Google's new social networking site, Google+ built to
beat Facebook primarily on privacy features [1]has several privacy bugs
the company is working to fix. While some enthusiastic beta testers
clamor for Google to open the social networking site to everybody now,
it's clear Google needs to address these issues before launching Google+
more broadly. Stumbling right out of the gate over privacy problems would
likely doom Google+'s chances of emerging as a viable, realistic rival to
Facebook, which rules the social networking market with about 700 million
account holders. So far, beta testers have been [2]mostly positive about
Google+, particularly over its design to make it easier for users to
share posts and content with different sets of people, as opposed with
their entire list of contacts. Many of the [3]existing privacy bugs in
Google+ revolve around the site's mechanism to block users, according to
this published list."

potential benefits are huge. Watson could either augment existing sales
