[0]brothke writes "Surveillance or Security?: The Risks Posed by New
Wiretapping Technologies is a hard book to categorize. It is not about
security, but it deals extensively with it. It is not a law book, but
legal topics are pervasive throughout. It is not a telecommunications
book, but extensively details telco issues. Ultimately, the book is a
most important overview of security and privacy and the nature of
surveillance in current times." Read below for the rest of Ben's review.

[0]Harperdog with this excerpt from a story about using statistics to
fight crime: "Its great when cops catch criminals after they've done
their dirty work. But what if police could stop a crime before it was
even committed? Though that may sound like a fantasy straight from a
Philip K. Dick novel, it's a goal police departments from Los Angeles to
Memphis are actively pursuing with help from the Department of Justice
and a handful of cutting-edge academics. It's called 'predictive
policing.' The idea: Although no one can foresee individual crimes, it is
possible to [1]forecast patterns of where and when homes are likely to be
burgled or cars stolen by analyzing truckloads of past crime reports and
other data with sophisticated computer algorithms. 'We know where crime
has occurred in the last month, but that doesn't mean it'll be there next
month,' Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Sean Malinowski says. 'The only
way for us to continue to have crime reduction is to start anticipating
where crime is going to occur.'"

Electronic Arts recently launched their own digital distribution platform
named Origin, a merging of various similar services they've operated in
the past and a direct competitor to Steam. The two rivals have already
[0]butted heads over DLC distribution, with Valve's business terms
forcing Crysis 2 off Steam. (And this may be just the first shot in the
upcoming [1]content distribution wars, though EA says it will [2]continue
to allow downloads through other outlets, and that Origin could support
games from other publishers in the future.) Now, EA has announced that
Origin will include some degree of cross-platform support, and will
[3]try to battle Apple's Game Center on iOS devices.

[0]coondoggie writes "While the debate over Social Security benefits is
heating up in Congress, one of the most basic ways everyone interacts
with the agency the yearly Social Security Statement is [1]in limbo
as the agency struggles to move it online. The Social Security Statement
had been issued every year since 2000 to more than 150 million workers
serving as the government's key way of communicating with workers about
benefits, earnings records and how much retirement money they have. The
statement is also a key tool for communicating with the public about the
long-term financial challenges the Social Security system faces. However,
whether you realize it or not, the SSA suspended mailings of the
statement in March citing budgetary concerns."
