RockDoctor writes "Theologian John Haught publicly debated prominent
evolutionary scientist and atheist [0]Jerry Coyne at the University of
Kentucky back in October. Before the debate, both parties agreed to the
debate being video-taped. Coyne is of the opinion that he convincingly
won the debate over Haught. But we'll never know, because Haught, with
the assistance of staff at the University of Kentucky, who sponsored the
debate, is [1]banning publication of the video of the event. They are
even refusing to release the half of the debate containing Coyne's

article discusses a new book exposing the App Store millionaires, called

the intense feeling of being in the top-ten: 'The App Store had

OverTheGeicoE writes "ProPublica has a story on how x-ray scanners became
the controversial yet mandatory security fixtures we in the US must now
endure. The story title, '[0]U.S. Government Glossed Over Cancer Concerns
As It Rolled Out Airport X-Ray Scanners,' summarizes a substantial part
of the article, but not all of it. The story also describes how
government attitudes about the scanners went from overwhelmingly negative
in the early 1990s to the naive optimism we see today. How did this
change occur? The government weakened its regulatory structure for
radiation safety in electronic devices, and left defining safety
standards to an ANSI committee dominated by scanner producers and users
(prison and customs officials). Even after 9/11 there was still great
mistrust of x-ray scanners, but nine years of lobbying from scanner
manufacturers, panic over failed terrorist attacks, and pressure from
legislators advancing businesses in their own districts eventually forced
the devices into the airports. The article estimates that 6 to 100
cancers per year will be caused by the x-ray scanners."

UnknowingFool writes "When the [0]Courier project was leaked out, it was
a bold look at how MS would design new tablets. Microsoft was currently
selling tablets but they didn't make a dent in the market. [1]The problem
was it was too bold. According to the story Ballmer had two competing
executive visions for tablets: J. Allard and Steven Sinofsky. Allard's
vision was very different from MS thinking while Sinofsky's was more in
line with existing Windows but was years away. Ballmer called on Gates to
help and Gates met with Allard. Gates was apparently troubled on how
Courier would not mesh with Windows or Office. The project was
[2]cancelled shortly thereafter. An interesting detail was that Courier
was more complete than most outsiders knew. While there was no one
prototype than unified all the concepts of Courier, there were parallel
efforts in the different aspects of it."

First time accepted submitter Z_God writes "Disappointed with KDE 4's
performance and other shortcomings, Timothy Pearson continued KDE 3.5
development under the name Trinity. Tuesday [0]the first major update of
the Trinity Desktop Environment was released providing an alternative
upgrade path for KDE users that do not feel comfortable with KDE 4. The
Trinity Desktop Environment should provide a fast and familiar experience
for all users expecting a traditional desktop environment. Packages are
available for Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora from the Trinity project site."

sammcj writes with news that HP is [0]developing servers based on 32-bit
ARM processors from Calxeda. Their current model is only a test setup,
but they plan to [1]roll out a finalized design by the middle of next
year. "HP's server design packs 288 Calxeda chips into a 4U rack-mount
server, or 2,800 in a full rack, with a shared power, cooling, and
management infrastructure. By eliminating much of the cabling and
switching devices used in traditional servers and using the low-power ARM
processors, HP says it can reduce both power and space requirements
dramatically. The Redstone platform uses a 4U (7-inch) rack-mount server
chassis. Inside, HP has put 72 small server boards, each with four
Calxeda processors, 4GB of RAM and 4MB of L2 cache. Each processor, based
on the ARM Cortex-A9 design, runs at 1.4GHz and has its own 80 gigabit
cross-bar switch built into the chip"

Master Moose writes "New Zealand's largest ISPs confirmed yesterday that
they had [0]received their first notices under the government's new
copyright regime, which came into effect on September 1. All the notices
received so far appear to be from the Recording Industry Association of
New Zealand. Telecom, for example, received 42 notices 35 for alleged
download of songs by R&B star Rihanna, six for Lady Gaga tunes and one
for British recording artist Taio Cruz. Curiously, it was the music
industry, rather than the movie industry, that fired the first shot. It
was believed the Motion Picture Association was keen to go after
copyright infringers."

An anonymous reader writes "A [0]tweet appeared from Raspberry Pi stating
the launch of the $25 wasn't happening in November as expected. So I
decided to investigate further and contacted Raspberry Pi to see what was
going on. Eben Upton was kind enough to email me back and give us some
good and bad news. The bad news is, we aren't getting the $25 PC this
month as expected. But that's where the bad news ends as it is still
arriving in 2011 for some people. Eben confirmed that an order has been
placed for 10,000 units, but they won't arrive until the end of November.
That means we will see [1]Raspberry Pi go up for sale in December, but it
won't be a typical 'get as many out the door as you can' launch. Those
first 10k are earmarked for programmers as software is desperately
required before a full consumer launch." Update: Apparently some of the
details about the production of units and who can get one from the first
batch have changed. Raspberry Pi has [2]updated their front page with the
latest information.

[0]MrSeb writes "When the [1]Microsoft-Nokia strategic alliance was first
announced in February, there was absolutely no mention of money: Nokia,
seemingly on its own accord, had decided that Windows Phone 7 was the
future of its smartphone efforts. A week later it emerged that Microsoft
and Google had been competing for Nokia's affections a bidding war that
concluded with Microsoft agreeing to pay Nokia billions of dollars to
help market and develop Windows phones. Fast forward to today and Nokia's
CEO, Stephen Elop, is making rather odd comments about the tablet market:
'[2]Theres a new tablet opportunity coming. We see the opportunity,'
Elop said to Bloomberg Businessweek yesterday. Furthermore, he had only
positive things to say about Windows 8 that it's a "supercharged"
version of WP7, but for tablets. Does that sound like Nokia is planning
to bring out [3]a Windows 8-powered tablet? Is it possible that
Microsoft's multi-billion-dollar agreement with Nokia also included
Windows 8?"
