Dear Arfin,

Today, Uganda passed the "Kill the Gays" bill through the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament. The bill, which would allow extreme punishment of "aggravated homosexuality," will now be put up to vote in Ugandan Parliament as early as next week.

This bill's original version calls for the death penalty for being gay or committing an "illegal sex act". "Aggravated homosexuality" can also lead to the death penalty.

People are charged with "aggravated homosexuality" when they're punished for multiple "violations," which can include actions such as renting a room to a gay person, donating to a gay cause, fighting for gay rights, or not reporting a gay person to law enforcement. Straight individuals can be charged with these offenses as well.

Though Uganda is claiming that the death penalty is now no longer included in the legislation, many human rights activists feel that Parliament can easily add that provision back in once the bill's passed.

People should not have to fear for their freedom, safety, and their very lives because of their sexual orientations. Will you sign the petition to stand with LGBT people and their straight allies in Uganda?
