[0]Hugh Pickens writes "The WSJ reports that following three nights of
rioting and looting in London, Blackberry's messaging network and social
networking sites are being blamed by police, politicians and media
organizations for [1]helping rioters in London spread word about the next
hot spot . It's an 'encrypted, very secure, safe, fast, cheap, free, easy
way for disaffected urban youth to spread messages for the next targets,'
says Mike Butcher, editor of TechCrunch Europe and digital advisor to the
Mayor of London. But Ian Maude, an analyst at Enders Analysis, said it's
unfair to lay the blame on technology. 'Certainly, it's a lot easier for
people to communicate with each other in real time via some of these
services but that's a fact of life. They're not good or evil in
themselves, its the purposes for which people use them.' The Metropolitan
Police, known as Scotland Yard, say they are monitoring social media
sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM), the
maker of Blackberry smartphones, says it has 'engaged with the
authorities to assist in any way we can.'" An anonymous reader points out
that the rioters aren't the only ones using technology. London police
have begun [2]posting pictures on Flikr of people they'd like to
interview following the riots over the last few days.

bizwriter writes with a news piece in bnet about the [0]continuing battle
between Samsung and Apple. From the article: "In a stunning and painful
decision for Samsung, Apple got a German court to [1]issue a preliminary
injunction against the Galaxy Tab. According to patent analyst and
blogger Florian Mueller, that means Samsung [2]cannot ... sell its tablet

jailbroken phones from using un-sanctioned tethering apps. Verizon will
now require users to be subscribed to a mobile tethering plan to be able
to use tethering at all." So which mobile company's actually any good for
3G tethering, voice service aside? My Virgin Mobile MiFi (bought under a

$40/month, but has had too much downtime for my taste, and atrocious

An anonymous reader writes "[0]Mozilla could be heading into an open
confrontation with its rivals Google, Apple and Microsoft as browsers
evolve into platforms. Mozilla's director of Firefox engineering John
Nightingale gave some insight on the past, present, and future of Mozilla
and outlined why Firefox still matters. While Mozilla is accused of
[1]copying features from [2]other browsers, the company says the opposite
is the case. Nightingale says that a future Firefox will [3]give a user
much more control over what he does on the Internet and that Mozilla
plans on competing with the ideal of an [4]open web against siloed
environments." Chrome may have a nice interface and be a bit faster than
Firefox's [5]rendering engine, but if Firefox failed as a project I'd
miss its [6]Emacs-like [7]extensibility (something all other browsers
lack).

Facebook, Village Instruments agreed to begin development of an
[0]external Thunderbolt-connected graphics card enclosure. Village
Instruments already has experience with its ExpressCard-connected ViDock
graphics card chassis, which provides extra GPU juice for Windows and Mac
laptops, and the Thunderbolt version is expected to be the same kind of
thing but faster. The only problem is, Thunderbolt is only 4x PCIe 2.0,
so you won't be using this to connect modern, desktop-class GPUs to your

striking down a voter-approved measure requiring every adult arrested on
a felony charge to submit a DNA sample. The First District Court of
Appeal in San Francisco said [0]Proposition 69 amounted to

million samples have been taken following the law's 2009 implementation.

duplicated from the FBI's Terrorist Screening Database, which has proven
not to be accurate many times in the past. DHS wants to exempt the
Watchlist Service from Privacy Act provisions, meaning [0]you will never
know if you are wrongfully listed. Privacy groups worried about
inaccurate info and mission creep have filed a protest, arguing the
Privacy Act says DHS must notify subject of government surveillance. DHS
has admitted that it 'does not control the accuracy of the information in
system of records' and that 'individuals do not have an opportunity to
decline to provide information.' Additionally, the DHS Watchlist Service
attempts to circumvent privacy protections established by the Privacy
Act. Who's watching the watchers?"

Stoobalou writes with an interview in Thinq with a few folks from ARM on
their plans for the future of embedded graphics. From the article: "'If
you're looking at the visual experience that we can deliver on a mobile,
in terms of the capabilities of the [0]devices that are on the market
today, increasingly it is visually outstanding but we need to do more
maths, because we have an increasing screen resolution and we have
increasing content complexity, and we have to do it all in pretty low
power. So, if we look at where we were a few years ago, if you take the
benchmarks of a VGA display and typical low-res content all of a
sudden, by the time you get to a 4K screen and some of the complexity of
tesselated stuff you see in DX11 today, you're talking about a 500x
increase in performance.' ... 'We're still [1]maintaining that 1W power
envelope within your mobile device, yet being expected to deliver 500
times the performance,' Hickman added. That's a major undertaking, but
one which the next generation of Mali processors will work towards.' All
of the graphics development in the embedded world is nice, but it is
disheartening to see [2]the lack of source code for all of the new mobile
GPUs.

[0]astroengine writes "Early Tuesday morning, [1]the Sun unleashed a
powerful X-class flare. The X7 flare is the most energetic explosion to
come from the Sun [2]since December 2006. Although the flare was directed
away from the Earth, a minor proton storm was detected and some radio
communications have been disrupted due to higher-than-normal rates of
ionization in the Earth's ionosphere. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory
captured the whole event, imaging the flaring site and multi-million
degree post-flare plasma."

Orome1 writes "Google Image Search has for some time been [0]littered
with images that lure users to compromised sites that serve as doorway
pages to other malicious sites. Part of the problem is that these
compromised sites [1]often use the WordPress publishing platform, which
is infamous for the great number of security bugs that make it such a
preferred target. This fact has been proven once again by security
researcher Denis Sinegubko, who has [2]pinpointed 4,358 WordPress blogs
hijacked by unknown attackers and pumped full of popular search keywords
and images, which redirect users to sites that try to scare them into
buying a fake AV solution."

motion capture techniques use cameras to meticulously record the
movements of actors inside studios, enabling those movements to be
translated into digital models. But by turning the cameras around

themselves scientists at Disney Research Pittsburgh, and Carnegie
Mellon University have [1]shown that [2]motion capture can occur almost
anywhere in natural environments, over large areas, and outdoors."
