[0]jbrodkin writes "One of the original engineers of IBM's first PC says
PCs are 'going the way of the vacuum tube, typewriter, vinyl records, CRT
and incandescent light bulbs.' With the 30th anniversary of the IBM 5150
(running MS-DOS) coming this week, IBM CTO Mark Dean argues that [1]the
post-PC world is very much upon us, perhaps not surprising given that IBM
sold its PC business in 2005. Microsoft, of course, weighed in as well,
saying the PC era is nowhere near over. But perhaps in the future we will
consider a personal computer anything a person does computing on
whether that be laptop, tablet, smartphone, or something that hasn't even
been invented yet."

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last week we discussed news that Diablo 3 will include a real-money
auction house for items and [0]require a permanent connection to the
internet even for single-player games. Fan reaction has been [1]loud and
varied, with many decrying the restrictive DRM. Blizzard exec Robert
Bridenbecker said he was [2]surprised by the outrage at the online
requirement, saying, "it really is just the nature of how things are
going, the nature of the industry. When you look at everything you get by
having that persistent connection on the servers, you cannot ignore the
power and the draw of that." Some other developers came out in support of
the scheme; id Software's Tim Willits said always-on would be "[3]better
for everybody" in the end. Max Schaefer, one of the makers of Diablo 3
competitor Torchlight 2, said [4]he understands why they did it, even
though Torchlight 2 is not doing the same: "... it seems that most of
what they are doing is related to trying to keep a truly secure,
cheat-free economy in Diablo III. Whatever you do, you have to make
sacrifices. We sacrifice a cheat-free environment to give players the
most options, they are sacrificing options and flexibility for security
of the economy like you would in an MMO. I understand their approach and
sympathize with the technical difficulties of what they are trying to
do."

Their innovative control methods ensured they still sold like hotcakes.
An animated GIF of Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata holding a
DS that printed money became the go to picture to run alongside quarterly
announcements of Nintendo's gargantuan profits. If a disheveled man

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An editorial at PikiGeek takes the position that [0]gaming's trend toward
realism can be detrimental in many situations, with the quest for
graphical precision supplanting creativity and uniqueness. Quoting: "The
problem I find most troubling with realism in games is that video games
are inherently unrealistic. By definition, even, video games must adhere
to some sense of absurdity. In Uncharted, no matter how realistic and
convincing the characters and environments may be, the fact is that
Nathan Drake can take a hell of a lot of damage, and is a little too good
with every gun known to man. In Call of Duty, if realism is such a
coveted aspect of the series, why does your character only bleed out of
his eyes, and why is damage rarely permanent? The 'game' part of these
games keeps them from being truly realistic, and in turn makes them even
less believable. Characters like Link, or even Master Chief, are
believable in even the most absurd situations, as the worlds that they
belong to don't try to conform to the world that we live in."

new twist: while the app works on any iOS device, [1]it only works on
computers with Safari and Chrome. Blogger Brian Proffitt knows as well as
anyone that 'this isn't a deliberate snub of the other browsers. Clearly
the developers of this web app had to get it to work on Safari, because
that's the only vector to get it onto an Apple device. And, since both
Chrome and Safari have a shared ancestor in WebKit, it makes sense that
what would work in one browser would work in the other.' But it raises an
interesting question: 'If HTML5 and other web technologies are supposed
to be open and standardized, then will web app developers have to
continually tweak their apps in order to accommodate deficiencies or
advantages between browsers, or will browsers have to constantly stay in
sync with each other's features just to be able to run all the web apps

vuo writes "Finnish researchers have shown that the human brain contains
[0]photoreceptors that react to intracranial illumination. Light is
provided through the ear canal with bright-light headsets by [1]Valkee.
These devices, much like earphones or should we say 'earlumes,' are
registered medical devices. Retinal illumination or bright-light therapy
has been previously assumed to be the only way light indirectly affects
brains. Light therapy helps with mood swings, seasonal affective
disorder, jetlag and other circadian rhythm disruptions."

d2ncal wrote in to tell us about a new service that [0]takes all the

created by Christina Brodbeck and Dwipal Desai, who gave up their jobs at
YouTube to create the relationship quantifying service. The pair have
gone to great lengths to become relationship experts by doing things such
as: reading books on relationships, and enlisting the help of a couples

crookedvulture writes "SATA-IO has devised [0]a couple of new storage
interfaces optimized for solid-state drives. To serve high-performance
SSDs that are fast approaching the 6Gbps ceiling imposed by the current
Serial ATA specification, the SATA Express standard will meld the Serial
ATA software stack with PCI Express to offer up to 16Gbps of bandwidth.
SATA Express isn't expected to be completed until the end of the year,
but the new uSSD standard looks to be ready for prime time. Designed for
tablets and ultraportables, uSSD sticks with current 6Gbps speeds but
ditches traditional Serial ATA connectors, allowing SSD controller chips
to be soldered directly to motherboards. SanDisk already has a 128GB uSSD
primed for ultrabooks."

friends will be before you've even met them and has won a Microsoft
fellowship for his analysis. 'Data shows that who will be our next friend
on Facebook is not so random as we think,' he said. Based on information
about the personal networks of users and their communication he was able
to tell in advance half of the new contacts they would add shortly after.
In the future the rate of correctly predicted new friends could be even
higher, he said. 'We are able to train the analyzing methods,' Leskovec
said."

FullBandwidth writes "Seems like some intrepid Slashdotters are always
getting scoops on the soon-to-be-released handhelds (phones, tablets).
What's the best way to get technical information and release dates?
Apparently in the U.S., the vendors have to submit a certain amount of
documentation that then gets published on the fcc.gov website, but I'm
not sure if many of us have time to pore over that site. Are there
reliable sites or RSS feeds dedicated to what's the bleeding edge of
mobile computing?" I glance at [0]Liliputing more days than I don't,
partly because of frequent links to new handhelds and tablets as they hit
the FCC. Where else should people look?

hypnosec writes "A German technology researcher on Wednesday showed
global mobile makers and technology firms how [0]General Packet Radio
Service can easily be tapped, intercepted, and decrypted with an average
mobile phone and a few applications. According to the New York Times,
Karsten Nohl, a computer engineer and mobile security researcher,
demonstrated to fellow researchers gathered to attend [1]Chaos
Communication Camp, a Berlin-based hackers event, [2]how to intercept the
voice or data messages sent between mobile devices over GPRS easily,
owing to weak protection provided by mobile network carriers for data
information. Nohl, in collaboration with his colleague Luca Melette,
[3]tapped the information within a radius of five kilometers using a
seven-year-old inexpensive mobile phone from Motorola." Computerworld
also has an [4]informative, link-laden account. If you are attending this
year's CCC (only every four years, sadly), feel free to [5]drop a line
