theodp writes "GeekWire reports that, for better or worse, [0]the
upcoming week is shaping up as one of the most pivotal in Microsoft's
history, as the software giant makes its pitch for Windows 8 at two
important conferences. First, Microsoft will be huddling with hardware
and software developers beginning Tuesday at its sold-out [1]BUILD
conference ('BUILD will show you that Windows 8 changes everything'),
where it's rumored that Samsung will unveil a Windows 8 tablet. And on
Wednesday, CEO Steve Ballmer and other execs will be holding the
company's [2]annual Financial Analyst Meeting, which was delayed from its
traditional summer date to allow the company to put its Windows 8
strategy in context for Wall Street. So, are we about to finally see the
realization of Microsoft's vision for [3]Information at Your Fingertips ([4]Part
2), which Bill Gates introduced with a hokey video at Comdex 1994?"

allow for secure and encrypted remote backups over the Internet to a
second network drive, preferably advanced enough that all drive content
does not have to be transmitted every time. The solution may come as a
pair of network drives, and two-way synching would actually be a plus.
The drives would be behind respective NATs and setup must allow
connecting to any target port. The solution should be readily available

Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND). That matters, because open
source can't in general implement FRAND standards (there are legal hacks
that can be applied in a few special circumstances.) [2]First it seemed
that RF had the upper hand [.pdf], but [3]later comments from officials
cast doubt on that. Now we have the definitive answer from the UK
Minister for the Cabinet Office, Francis Maude: '[4]The Government
require that their ICT should be built on open standards, wherever
possible, to improve competition and avoid lock-in to a particular
technology or supplier. Fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND)
specifications may present some difficulties for the open source software
development model in terms of patents and royalties. To deliver a level
playing field for both open source and proprietary software, open
standards are needed.' Will UK government use of open source finally take
off, or is this a hollow victory?"

With his first posted submission, SpaceCracker writes "According to this
Bloomberg article, [0]hardware giants like HP and Dell are losing out to
Intel and others who've adapted more quickly to the trend of shifting
from traditional, off-the-shelf servers to custom-tailored machines.
'Buyers say custom servers provide a cheaper, more efficient way of
meeting the boom in demand for personal data shared via the Web. A lot of
that demand can be met by less expensive machines shorn of the
components, upgrades and backup services that server makers traditionally
offer to large corporations.'"

New submitter cartman writes "A substance found in brown algae,
'including the type which forms forests of giant kelp,' could be [0]used
to increase the storage capacity of batteries, according to scientists at
Georgia Tech ([1]abstract). The substance, called alginate, allows
silicon particles in the anode to swell without damaging the anode,
thereby increasing storage capacity of batteries by up to a factor of 10.
'The full potential of a silicon anode can't be exploited until
researchers develop a matching cathode capable of handling the same
amount of lithium ions. But even with existing cathodes, alginate-silicon
anodes could increase the capacity of lithium-ion batteries by 30 to 40
percent, according to Yushin.'"

An anonymous reader writes "Bloomberg reports that chip-maker Broadcom
will be [0]spending $3.7 billion to acquire NetLogic Microsystems in an
effort to shore up their wireless infrastructure business. 'Customers
such as Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp. use NetLogic processors in
the equipment that controls the flow of video and other data across the
Internet. The deal gives Broadcom, which also makes chips for mobile
handsets, a more profitable way to harness the boom in tablets and
smartphones, said Stacy Rasgon, an analyst Sanford C. Bernstein & Co.'
The Register cites this as evidence that corporate tax breaks don't
create jobs, as companies look to [1]spend spare cash instead on
acquisitions. The deal is expected to be completed during the first half
of next year."
