sooth... writes "What clever ways have network administrators found to
cleanly sort varying length patch cables within IDFs, BDFs, and MDFs or
simply wiring closets? Pictures or examples are welcome." Since not
everyone is a network administrator, let's expand this to include
efficient or clever management of other cables. How do you route your
computer cables (internal or external), your entertainment center cables,
or any other corded setup?

An anonymous reader writes "Research in Motion, by all accounts, had a
terrible week. [0]But things might get even worse. The Canadian
technology company [1]posted dismal quarterly earnings numbers, missing
revenue and sales targets, while margins continued to shrink. Co-CEO Mike
Lazaridis conceded the PlayBook had been thwarted by a lack of apps and
content, not necessarily by a weak platform. Like Apple with its iOS, and
Microsoft with Windows, creating a successful platform will be dependent
on the eco-system it supports, but RIM hasn't shown ability to foster
that." Speculation has begun as to whether or not RIM will wind up having
a [2]PlayBook firesale in the same vein as [3]the TouchPad.

[0]Aguazul writes "The BBC has an interesting take on George Lucas's
meddling with our memories: 'Fans of Star Wars are not happy. Someone has
been tampering with their movie history.' They speculate on [1]who really
owns a piece of art. Even the artist doesn't really know what he's
created, and a work doesn't become 'something' until given value by an
audience: 'the artist is merely the medium for his or her work.' Many
people contributed to the Star Wars trilogy. Is Lucas' over-inflated idea
of his own importance in the process the reason he is stopping people
seeing the unmodified originals?"

Facebook has done it on a far larger scale than my old days of sysadmin.
Quoting: 'When your infrastructure is the size of Facebook's, there are
always broken servers and pieces of software that have gone down or are
generally misbehaving. In most cases, our systems are engineered such
that these issues cause little or no impact to people using the site. But
sometimes small outages can become bigger outages, causing errors or poor
performance on the site. If a piece of broken software or hardware does
impact the site, then it's important that we fix it or replace it as
quickly as possible. ... We had to [0]find an automated way to handle
these sorts of issues so that the human engineers could focus on solving
and preventing the larger, more complex outages. So, I started writing
scripts when I had time to automate the fixes for various types of broken
servers and pieces of software.'"

bs0d3 writes "Dr. Patrice Nordmann has disclosed the results of a small
study that looked for resistant bacteria in seagull poop landing on Miami
Beach in Florida. During April 2010, they collected 52 stool samples and
found within them 83 isolates of gut bacteria such as E. coli. Wired's
Maryn McKenna writes, 'Seven of the E. coli carried genes that direct
production of CTX-M enzymes, a troublesome resistance factor that
protects bacteria from the very broad category of drugs called
extended-spectrum beta-lactams and that has recently spread worldwide. In
addition, 14 of the E. coli were also carrying the gene for the CMY-2
enzyme, which confers the same ESBL resistance on Salmonella. [0]Nine of
the isolates were multi-drug resistant.' This has led some scientists to
the conclusion that this is one avenue these bacterias are taking in
human infections worldwide. The resistance factors identified in the
seagull feces match ones that cause highly resistant infections in
humans, and correlates with data collected on beaches in Portugal,
Sweden, and France."
