President Obama is proposing a [0]new tax rate for people making over $1m
a year. The new rate is part of a larger plan which seeks to bring in
[1]$1.5 trillion in new tax revenue and is sure to meet opposition in
congress. From the article: "The core of the president's plan totals just
more than $2 trillion in deficit reduction over 10 years. It combines the
new taxes with $580 billion in cuts to mandatory benefit programs,
including $248 billion from Medicare." GOP Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin
said, "Class warfare may make for really good politics but it makes for
rotten economics."

very fast Internet connection (100M with the possibility of 200M in the
future). I'm used to running OpenWRT on my Linksys WRT54G router and
would like a well supported router to replace it. While researching
routers I found most reviewers were using the default firmware and since
I'll be putting on OpenWRT I'd like to know how well it works when using
that. My requirements are gigabit LAN and WAN, 802.11N at 2.4Ghz and
5Ghz, well supported by OpenWRT and/or DD-WRT, and USB support would be
nice. I was thinking of going with [0]BUFFALO WZR-HP-AG300H but some
reviewers say there are range and dropping issues. My ISP suggests the
[1]Apple Airport Extreme which isn't supported by OpenWRT or the
[2]D-Link 825 which has connection problems as well and a few friends
told me to stay away form D-Link. What does slashdot think?"

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are planning on
[0]launching an adult oriented website to help protect animals through a
mix of animal suffering footage and porn. I'm not sure how mixing the two
will win hearts, minds, or naughty bits, but Lindsay Rajt, PETA's
associate director of campaigns, seems to think it's a good idea. She
says, "We're hoping to reach a whole new audience of people, some of whom
will be shocked by graphic images that maybe they didn't anticipate
seeing when they went to the PETA triple-X site."

Guardian which [1]questions whether Android should be described as 'free'
or 'open.' Quoting: "Google has complied with the requirements of the GNU
General Public License for Linux, but the Apache license on the rest of
Android does not require source release. Google has said it will never
publish the source code of Android 3.0 (aside from Linux), even though
executables have been released to the public. Android 3.1 source code is
also being withheld. Thus, Android 3, apart from Linux, is non-free
software, pure and simple. ... Android is a major step towards an
ethical, user-controlled, free-software portable phone, but there is a
long way to go. Hackers are working on [2]Replicant, but it's a big job
to support a new phone model, and there remains the problem of the
firmware. Even though the Android phones of today are considerably less
bad than Apple or Windows smartphones, they cannot be said to respect
your freedom."

wrong. 'Recent satellite images of Greenland make it clear that there are
in fact still numerous glaciers and permanent ice cover where the new
Times Atlas shows ice-free conditions and the emergence of new lands,'

out that if 15 percent of Greenland ice cover had been lost, then [4]sea
levels would have risen by 1 meter... which has not happened. Perhaps yet
another climate controversy is brewing." An update to the Sciencemag.com
story pinpoints the probable source of the error: a 2001 map from the
NSIDC illustrates Greenland's central ice sheet without showing any of
the peripheral glaciers. The Atlas editors may have seen this map and
misinterpreted it. Says the article, "Now glaciologists are left trying
to figure out how not understate the importance of the extent glacial ice
melt, while at the same time correcting the error."

latest version of Windows 8 will run on ARM processors, Raspberry Pi is a
$25 ARM based machine and now the open source Arduino platform has a new

supports 32-bit instructions and runs at 96Mhz. The Due will have 256KB

the current Uno or Mega. However, it's not all gain ��� the 3.3V operating

mission, the lunar module, nicknamed 'Snoopy,' was jettisoned and sent
into a solar orbit ��� it is still believed to be out there, 42 years
later. 'We're expecting a search arc up to 135 million kilometers in size
which is a huge amount of space to look at,' British amateur astronomer
Nick Howes told Discovery News. 'We're aware of the scale and magnitude
of this challenge but to have the twin Faulkes scopes assist the hunt,
along with schools, plus the fact that we'll doubtless turn up many new
finds such as comets and asteroids makes this a great science project
too.'"

Following up on our [0]digital wallet discussion yesterday, [1]CWmike
writes "Google officially [2]launched its Google Wallet application today
for NFC-ready Sprint Nexus S 4G phone users. The application launches
initially for Citi MasterCard credit card holders, but Google also said
today that Visa, Discover and American Express will be able to add their
cards to future versions of Google Wallet. The application, first
announced in May, was [3]described in an official blog post. Visa said in
a separate statement that [4]it has licensed Google to use Visa's PayWave
technology, used in 'hundreds of thousands' of terminals worldwide. But
Visa didn't describe a timeline for when that function would be enabled.
Google said it will allow users to add any bank card to a Google Prepaid
Card and they will receive $10 to try the service." Reviews of the
service are popping up, and many seem to say the same thing; [5]when it
works, it's great, but your real wallet isn't going anywhere.

defense contractor, has been a [0]victim of a cyber attack, according to
a report from the company. The company said attackers had gained access
to company computer systems, with some reports saying the attacks
targeted its submarine, missile and nuclear power plant component
businesses. According to The Yomiuri newspaper, approximately 80 systems
had been infected with malware at the company's headquarters in Tokyo, as
well as manufacturing and research and development sites, including Kobe
Shipyard & Machinery Works, Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works and
Nagoya Guidance & Propulsion System Works. 'We can't rule out small
possibilities of further information leakage but so far [1]crucial data
about our products or technologies have been kept safe,' a Mitsubishi
Heavy spokesman told Reuters. 'We've found out that some system
information such as IP addresses have been leaked and that's creepy
enough,' the spokesman added."

power management system for smartphones that could dramatically improve
battery life. The system, known as [0]E-MiLi, or Energy-Minimizing Idle
Listening, addresses the energy waste that occurs when 'sleeping' phones
are looking for incoming messages and clear communication channels.
E-MiLi slows down the clock of a phone's WiFi card by up to 1/16 its
normal frequency in order to save power, but then kicks it back up to
full speed when information is coming in. The phone uses the header of
the incoming message to wake itself up from its 'subconscious mode,' so
the clock is at full speed to receive the main message. For users on the
busiest networks, it could extend battery life by up to 54 percent."
